  • Oki 5250 – which software

Posted by Kenny Ramsey on 16 November 2006 at 12:32

    Afternoon all 😀

I’m just wondering if any Oki users out there use their own software (ie Corel or Flexisign) for printing number plates etc rather than the software that is supplied with it.

I’m getting pretty poor results and I’d like to try and pin point the problem.

    Many thanks

I posted here a while ago about. In simple terms and unles I’m missing something, it only seems to print image files well.

If I’m printing showplates made up of photographs for example, it prints perfect almost every time.

However, if I go into Flexisign, Corel Draw, Photoshop etc and try and print a reg plate with say, a blue border and black digits, almost every print is terrible. The colour fades in and out and is never solid and the black does the same.

Strangely though, if I try and print a simple reg but with a jpeg on the side, it’s pretty good most of the time.

It’s set to transparency but it’s the same for ultra heavy etc.

hi we use photo shop to do our borders ect then we save them as gifs and open up corel draw and make up a template size for a plate 520mm by 111mm then we import the border the badge and mak up the txt in corel s own txt tool
this is all then printed on an oki 3200n on to transparent sheets with settings transparency and we have the printer set up as default printer on plate size as default .

we do how ever have the problems u are describing when we try to print on to clear vinyl with it
the first part say aan 4 size is perfect then the rest goes to pot so we only use the transparencys now

may ur transparencys are not right we got some from ebay once they were rubbish but now we get from lg site can give u a link if thats allowed here

Kenny, what OKI printer are you using? Do you have the version supplied by the number plate makers such as tennants or have you bought one off the shelf?
Reason I ask is because I have an OKI 5400n which I bought for my own use and then found that LG used a similar machine for number plates etc. I thought I would be able to use mine for the same thing but the results were not very good at all. The machines Tennants sell have been modified to do this sort of work and mine hasen’t.

Don’t know if that is any help to you at all. I do use it to print directly from Inspire which is similar to flexi with no problems but I am only using it to print visuals for customers on paper.

hi martin dont mean to be rude mate but this firmware upgrade for 40 quid they offer u i beleive to be rubbish
mine is off the shelf as u put it
bought from shop oki . com
2 years weve had and several hundred number plates later its still working finenever had a problem with it doing number plates just other stuff like long bits of clear vinyl
so i do believe if u want to do number plates u dont need this firmware just the right supplys for the plates

how ever like i said earlier mine is a c3200 model not like u may be somet in mine urs aint and vice versa but i certainly wouldnt be looking to spend another 40 quid for firmware and shipping expences .im buying another this month was looking in to a 7200 so will let u no if that does em .

Carla I’m confused in another post you ask for help regarding using ink to make a boarded on number plates

if you have the above and its great why would you want the mess and time taken to use ink to screen print a boarded

Carla, your not being rude at all. The whole point of this forum is for people to try and help each other so if you know something I don’t then thats great.

I was only passing on what I had been told at the time which was that the machines were modified to allow them to do certain types of work that the off the shelf machines couldn’t do. If I remember rightly they operated at a higher temperature, possibly even used a different toner and a couple of other things that I can’t remember. I wasn’t offered and firmware upgrade just told they would take my machine off my hands as it was almost new and supply me with one of theirs for £x. Sorry can’t remember the figure but it was quite high so I didn’t bother.

I never used it for any sign work as I was told that in its current state the prints would not last very long as the toner is not really UV stable. If you have been using a standard printer from OKI for the last 2 years without any problems then I was obviously just dupped by someone looking to make a sale.
