Due to the new laws on making plates, I`ve not bothered doing them for some time.

Eventually I`ve got around to registering with the DVLA.

I`ve read the info they have sent me, and understand it.

    1 question remains.

Do I still need to gather the correct info/documents, before selling a “Show/Custom” plate?????

I dont Becky, but cover yourself with either on the invoice or a sticker on the back stating for show/off road use only.

This is all a matter of interpretation of the laws. You cannot make a “counterfeit” plate! But what is a counterfeit?

I have been advised by the DVLA that “show plates” are allowable but these are for use “off road” only. E.g. for car shows and main dealer forecourts etc. In general they are sold and used as “signs”. So therefore are not seen as being a “counterfeit”.

So if you make a “show plate” I would cover yourself by either advertising them as “For show use only” and/or getting your customer to sign a disclaimer – For show use only.

We print on reverse of the plate “For show use only” as an additional disclaimer.

None of the above has been tested in a court of law! So it is advice only.

I would imagine to get prosecuted they would have to prove:

You knowingly made a “show plate” for on road purposes.

We also keep records of everything we make….just in case! – credit card slips/ signed disclaimers etc etc.

    Hope this helps ?

Just spoke to a guy who used to make plates and his Girlfriend is a copper. He advised me even though i advertise them as show plates, tell the customer there show plates , and put a sticker on the back, to still get the customer to sign a disclaimer.
This is because ( so i have been told and need to look up for myself) that the police/dvla inspectors can

1 seize all your plate making equipment
    2 fine u £2K

and the chap you sold the plates to could take the sticker off and deny that you told them that the plates were for show/off road use only.

    can anyone confirm this please

1 seize all your plate making equipment
This has happened although i have no specific details

    2 fine u £2K
The fine as an unregistered plate maker is up to 5k.

Two recent cases – fines at £350. ( no records ).

Believe that they are more concerned with “Records” at the moment than with “show plates” that’s why we record everything.

Sign a disclaimer, good idea for total safety.
