not something I’ve ever considered getting involved in but i believe you have to be a registered/official supplier of plates nowadays. yes there are the ebay type show plates still on the go, but its being clamped down on hard… personally i think there would be much more money in doing it the legit way and become registered.

im sure others on here will be able to help you much more on this than i can. 😀

Legit is the way I want to go.

I can maybe share space next to a place where a lot of boy racers hang about, so word could spread in the community.

Info on producing legit plates where and how to register etc. Also any info and pitfalls of producing show plates.

    Cheers for the start Rob.

Robert, Johnny is in America so their laws will be far different from our own. Sure one of the American members will be able to give more details.

you need to register to make plates,
but you will not be able to sell show plates, anything with a registration number, must conform to the regs. most plate suppliers are now not sign makers, they are in the motor trade.
They sell the plates as an add on service to what they already do.
Most bodyshops have their own machine and are registered, so not an easy market to get into

We make plates for some people that come in – the Police told us that all we needed to take was a copy of their V5 – and we aern’t allowed to do show plates, i.e fancy spacing, strange letters or names on them – they have to be bog standard with our company name and postcode on it.

I think you have been mis-informed, you do need to register to supply plates.

I recently bought a set of legal ones, with euro at the side and a line round the edge for £8 delivered off the net, nice quality too, they would have cost me £10 through the motor trade.
You really would have to be making a lot of plates to even make plate making a consideration. Should add the motor trade £10 ones would also be delivered for that price. If the start up cost is quite low, and the regulations are not too involved, and there is a demand in your area, give it a go. My area is sown up, you’d have to literally give them away down here, and they’d still want them delivered.
Think you can get a fairly hefty fine for making them if you’re not registered, that said I’ve never heard of anyone actually getting done. For £8 I didn’t even bother making my own, which it seems is ok for some reason.

Johnny, not quite sure what opportunities you can see for this sort of equipment but as far as number plates go you have to be registered to produce them and with people like dingbro supplying garages for next to nothing it will be difficult to sell any plates at all.
As for boy racers they don’t want legal plates they want fancy plates and you are now not allowed to produce any type of show plate. As Robert has already said they are starting to clamp down on this now so it could be the end for those currently supplying them on ebay and not the time to start thinking about starting up.

Sorry if this sounds a bit negative but best to know now rather than in a few months time once you have spent the money.
