Thought I would show some pictures of a Fibreglass Kit car I have been vinyl wrapping at home. Being fibreglass there are no rust issues to deal with so even though the body was pretty rough to begin with, I was able to wrap it after simply rubbing the old paint down to a flat finish, (the old paint job was very shoddy with quite a few runs). I was very pleased with the end result which demonstrates that a vinyl wrap really can make a silk purse out of a sows ear. The job was done in stages and in total I reckon I spent about 24 man hours wrapping the car over a period of about 3 months in my spare time.

That looks very nice Phil, I think the Gulf colours look just right as well. Are the headlamp covers removable or have you just left them covered for the ‘roll out’ ?

I always wanted to do a car wrap before I packed up working, I did a couple of vans a few years ago but with very thick printed material unlike the latest generation of coloured vinyls.

    Phil
Great car project. I always really liked the gulf racing colours. They suit most sports cars and the contrasting colours suit your vehicle really well.

Nice job on the wrap too.

The headlamp covers are temporary Steve. I will be getting new ones made up cut from 3mm clear acrylic.

The Capri is also wrapped Kevin – I did it a few years ago

Great to see the pictures Phill, I knew you wrapped the Capri but didnt realise you did the same with your Nova. well done!

What media did you use on it and how did you find it?
Was the whole body a gloss fibreglass or did you cover buffed areas? if so, how did the media take to those areas?

sorry for the random questions, just being nosey and genuinely interested in the vinyl performance of course. :smiles:

My mate posted this a few days ago, im guessing its from the Edinburgh area as that is where he is from. i haven’t seen a capri just like this before, but instantly thought … "maybe one of phills mate?" :smiles:

That Capri belongs to a guy called Ken Tod. It’s a lovely car – an RS3100 replica.

I used 3M 1080 vinyl because it was the closest colour I could find to the Gulf blue. It went on well but I think I prefer Avery as it seems to work easier then the 3M did. Having said that the 3M had some very deep recesses to deal with and coped well although it was going white in some areas were I had to stretch it beyond it’s limits. Although the car is fibreglass it had been painted so I was applying the vinyl over the top of paint mostly, though there was a few areas where I had to rub it down to get rid of flaky paint and ended up down to the gelcoat, but it sticks fine

Great Job Phill. looks the biz.

That’s a posh looking garage you have. I thought I was the only one with a laminated floor..although I don’t keep car in mine.
