    Hey guys

I would like to wrap the rear doors on my wan, just a single solid colour, the vinyl I have and believe to be ok to use is oracal 751 although I know the 951 to be more ideal.

I attempted yesterday a few times but no matter what I did I had bubbles and creases, I’ve watched so many videos on this and read slot on here but I can’t figue out what I’m doing wrong.

First up I pull the vinyl tight, I then place the top on the bodywork and while keeping the vinyl tight, I place it on the bottom of the door all stretched.

I then start working my way down like I normally would when applying writing.

When I get bubbles and creases, I heat up the vinyl with my fingers behind it till it shrinks back and attempt to reapply.

The thing is I’m getting so many bubbles and creases, I watch some if the videos about it and they’re all using that special air release stuff.

Having described what I’ve been doing, can anyone give me done advice, I intend to go on a course but don’t have the time right now but at the same time would really like to get my back doors done.

    Thanks

If your film isn’t bubble free then don’t just drop the film onto the surface. Hold the film away from the surface and apply it with pressure from the squeegee so you expel all the air out.

Bubble free is going to be a lot easier for your first time as you can try and apply it the way you are now.

Sounds like your technique is all wrong to be honest Daniel, kind of difficult to explain but you have been doing this long enough now to know that not all vinyls are the same and some are more difficult than others.
If I were you I would go on a course first but if that’s not an option just now then I would at least buy some dedicated wrap vinyl possibly with air release technology and do it with that.
Yes 751 will do the job but it isn’t really designed for that sort of work and you probably need more experience working with it before attempting some of the more challenging jobs.
Lots to think about when applying, blade angle, stroke length, etc etc. even the condition of the squeegee is going to make a difference.

give me a shout if you need a hand.

Might be better off using a colour change wrap vinyl as its thicker and easier to apply. Hexis, APA etc.

    What vehicle is it anyway?

751 Is not a wrapping vinyl just a cast and is as sticky as *****. For a colour change you need the 3M 85 series.

Martin, it’s just the back doors Daniel is doing so 751 would be up to the job BUT as I said above you need to have a bit of experience with it and know it’s limitations to use it for a job like that which is where I think he is going wrong.

He would be better off with a dedicated wrap vinyl though, 3M 85 series is one but there are other films available that would be suitable.
Daniel, have you decided what course you are going to do yet ?? If you want to have a go at this before you do the course then the best bet would be to buy whatever material they use for the course you are doing to give yourself a feel for that particular vinyl.

Well I would’nt use 751 as its too sticky and cannot be repositioned.

We wrapped a Smart Roadster in Oracal 751 that a customer supplied and it was not easy. Try the Hexis HX vinyl, anyone can fit that.

I’m not disagreeing with you Martin in fact as I don’t do a lot of work anymore I doubt I would use it again myself especially as there are much better films available now. I use to use it years ago in fact Robert will probably remember it being on the back of my transit when UKSG was just starting out when most of these wrap films didn’t exist. Think the only film available at the time was the VWS 1 film.

Point is that some suppliers will tell you that you can use it and if you are fairly new to the industry then it can be very easy to believe what you are told.
As Jon says they did a customers vehicle with it, it wasn’t easy but they did do it so it can be done. They are experienced fitters so someone like Daniel just starting out with no training has little chance of getting it right (no offence Daniel) and no idea why they are having so many problems when the videos show it as pretty straight forward. But then again they aren’t using 751 in the video :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

    Thanks guys

I’ll try and get a few samples to give me a better understanding.

It’s a Renault Kangoo, my new little beast, i call it Maggie, might even put a little sticker on the front like the eddie trucks lol

Hi Daniel, as you know I only use 751 but there are some jobs best suited to other vinyls. Order enough from APA and get a free wrap course with James, Hexis worth a look and of course 3m 85 from William Smith or Spandex

Just to add, the did a ford connect van with 751, i am not sure if it is just me but put on flat then blinked and full of bubbles thought what? peeled off did again same thing left over night no difference explained needed to use a different vinyl but they did not want to pay the extra so they told me to do it in the 751 ( in to punishment time), was not too happy with this but had run out of time so did it went and saw them 2 days later and they said what was the matter all was bubble free?

tried it on flat comp board and does the same goes on flat then seems to outgas then settles down 2 days later,
