    Hi all,

Im not a signwriter by trade but I do dabble in it when needed (i mostly do small scale shopfronts etc etc. A friend has asked about making some graphics for his van.

Now i have a cd full of vehicle templates and even though his peugeot 206 minivan isnt there, the normal 206 car is (its only the rear quartlight window thats different anyway)

My newbie question is how do I use a template? (adobe illustrator)

Do i layer my design over the car? Or do I have to select certain parts of the car and do it that way? also, do i have to enlarge the graphics to a certain ratio for print?

lol…i really dont know what to do and any help would be good.

    many thanks,
    Dave.

    hi Dave,
Be careful with car as opposed to van templates as the doorpillar can be in a different place, making the back panel a different size.

Most scales are 1:20 so design your graphics and lay over the car how you’d want it to look. Then once your happy with the design select the whole thing and times the measurements by 20 and you should be ok. But to be safe once you’ve scale to full size measure a panel and compare measurements with your outline. Sometimes they can be slighty out depending on which versions you use. I’ve had some where it’s come out too big so I multiplied by 18 instead to be a little smaller to make fit. That’s why it’s a good idea to measure a reference panel.

Then once your happy you need to break down all your graphics into colours and then cut.

Thank you very much Mark and Harry for your help. I kinda knew it was to do with ratios but errr didnt have a clue how to do it.

thanks again…ill post a pic when its done..cheers

    Dave

p.s. I thought it wouldve been possible to ‘select’ a car panel and design it from there. Could I do that as well?

most of the panels aren’t really full panels if that makes any sense. There really just seperate lines. You could select all the lines and group them before moving them but it will be easier just to design it all together. That way you’ll see the finished product as a whole.
