Hey guys, hope your all well. Just a quick one, iv got 3 full wraps to do by the end of the week and for some reason iv decided to try a different material, partly for cost reasons, but also research. The wraps only need to be on for 6 weeks, so didnt really want to spend the Avery 1900 prices , hoping that i could get away with something a bit less. I was then informed about the new 3M IJ170Cv3. I tried this last week in the Spandex open house and though id try it. Its only slightly cheaper than the Avery, but was told it would be ideal for the job! i printed and laminated the job over the weekend for 2 cars and had a go today at applying!! was a nightmare!! 6 years ive been wrapping cars etc and this made me look like id never seen a sticker before!! initially i did try wrapping it in one piece so it was 4.5 meters long! big mistake!! so i had trim to panel size, eventually getting the sides on. But i can honestly say , i have never seen a material stick like it. it was a battle just getting the backing sheet off, let alone position it on the car. I know it didnt have controltac, but my usual material doesnt either… once on the car, the material performed really well and looks nice and glossy, but it was just the getting it on that was the problem. Another nightmare was where it overlapped, it was so sticky, it was tearing the laminate off and leaving all the glue behind..

Has anyone else used this? I know people will say i should of bought the control tac, but honestly, i cant imagine how anyone could enjoy working with this!

Hi Ben, how long did you leave to outgass ? If you lam too quickly this can cause the vinyl to be more tacky.
Also, which ink do you use ?

I’ve noticed that 3M stuff seems to differ from roll to roll sometimes. We had some 180cv3 that was mega sticky once which is supposed to be controltac. Speak to the reps and see what they say.

Out of interest how is the vinyl before printing?? then you’ll know for sure if the adhesive feels wrong. The tests we’ve done on the ij170 were all really positive but there’s every chance that you might have a faulty roll/batch?? get back in touch with your supplier. They will need the Lot number which you will find on the inside of the core and this will help them check if any of their existing stock is from the same batch.
Sorry Rob I know I’m not supposed to comment so scrub this if you feel I’ve overstepped the mark.

Sp a decent supplier, who ever that might be, will charge us top rate unless we asked for discount !

Why don’t suppliers give a fair price in the first place ?

And why don’t the manufacturer give the supplier a better price….like everything in life you get what you pay for.

You would be surprised at how little a supplier would make and believe me having worked in manufacturing for 24 years before jumping the fence, I made a lot more than the supplier ever would on the material.
