New Printer – Replacing MIMAKI CJV30-160
Posted by Adam Zeit on 5 September 2011 at 17:22Hello,
We’ve got our MIMAKI CJV-30-160, earlier this year, and had lots of problems with head misfire, we’ve lost the magenta-yellow-cyan-black each at at time, in the middle of a 100 meter roll. So when we got to check the roll in the morning we’ve had to throw away more than half of the work.
We’ve been told that in an "Open ink system" (we use Inkflow 1liter bottles), that’s the way it works, and we should switch to cartidges (440mil) if we want to prevent head misfire.
We were proposed to get all our money back and return the machine, since the dealer can’t get our machine working for more than 20 meters without misfire.
So now to the following question, is it true? And what machine would you choose Roland 640 or mutoh 1614+Kona cutter.
I will use bordeaux inks.David Rowland replied 14 years ago 5 Members · 12 Replies -

none of the manufacturers will guarantee reliability when using the third party inks. These machines are designed to run on a sealed ink system.Kev

im stunned adam and mimaki printer is tried and tested with many on original inks

I would point the finger at the bulk ink too. We use carts and have no problem at all.
-
The Israeli market mainly uses bulk ink, we use more than 15 liter ink a month, and when buying good quality bulk ink for 70usd a liter instead of 370usd for original ink, it differs.
90 percent of mimaki printers that print more than 1500-2000 meters a month use the bulk ink and normally there are hardly any problems.
We print nearly 1200-1600 m2 a month. We have to use bulk.
So the question now is mutoh 1614 or vs640 from roland?
The mutoh representative says mutoh is far better print quality
And mutoh with the kona cutter here costs the same as the roland.
What would you do? -

in my opinion you are looking at the wrong machines for that amount of printing. You would be better looking at the Roland AJ series or Mimaki JV5
or may be one of the large HP latex ink printers. The range of printers you are speaking of may be able to cope but its at the top end of service, basically its like driving a car at full speed 24 hrs a day sooner or later its going to break down. Best of luck in solving your problemsKev

the cjv jv33 uses a single DX5 head… should be quite fast and reliable?!?!?!
the VS640 uses a single DX6 head… can be production based in dual cmyk but other colour turn it into a snail.
the mutoh vj-1618 and epson gs6000, the mutoh will run dual CMYK but cant get it in england and has DUAL DX6 heads. The Epson is 8 colour and still keeps good speed
The AJ is low-quality but does production at a very fast pace… good for banners
The JV5 is 4no DX5 heads, very powerful machine
The JV34 is dual DX6 (or is it DX5) staggered BUT only in 2.5mtr chassis, this is the printer to watch if they make a smaller one.
The Latex L25500 okay but maybe locked to HP consumables.
You might be better off getting some other engineers to work on ur CJV33

Dave, Kevin thank you for your answers.
Unfortunately we don’t have the MUTOH 1618 in Israel. The only version is the 1614 which is half speed. It come with a KONA cutter for the same price of the ROLAND VS640 and the MIMAKI CJV-30-160 is the cheapest of all costs $5K USD less. That was our machine for more than 3 months, however it lost heads.I don’t think that the quantity of 1500-2000 m2 a month is big for these machines. If we are talking about 20-22 working days a month, it is 70-100 m2 a day. We are not working 2 shifts, however most of the companies with 2-3 machines or more in Israel are working 24hours a day 5-7 days a week.
It is not much for the machine to work let’s say 8-9 m2 an hour for 12 hours a day.I had my last MUTOH, HP 6100, MIMAKI CJV-30-160 do it. The MIMAKI couldn’t stand it, however I know one or two of the same model that work 20 hours a day.
I’m working in DUAL CMYK and I guess it will be MUTOH 1614 or VS640. I’m afraid Roland has less quality than MUTOH 1614, is it true?
EPSON GS600, is nice, however I guess expensive in Israel, I’ll check that.
JV5, JV34 are expensive, Nice machines indeed.
The Latex is epensive per m2 printing, it costs 2-3 times more.

Hi Adam.
I’m afraid I would be inclined to agree with what’s already been said. Big ink systems in my experience are not as reliable as the cartridge fed systems. The only thing I could suggest is that you check the the ink supply is higher than the print bed height as you get better pressure to the heads.
If you take into account all the down time you’re experiencing, does a bulk ink system really save you that much money? Surely a slight hike in costs for cartridges will soon out weight the wasted materials you’re suffering?
The JV5 might be a more cost effective route in the long run too as although it’s a more expensive printer, it is designed for doing the high throughput you’re doing.
I don’t think the Mimaki CJV is the cause of you problems as I’ve worked on hundreds of Mimaki’s now (no exaggeration) and they are a very capable machine. I think it’s the way you’re pushing the ink through it. Just my thoughts on the matter anyway.
Best of luck

Eventually we have a winner here.
Just bought an epson gs6000 to replace our mimaki cjv30 and since we need a print and cut solution we’ll take summa 60 cm in addition. Why did i go for the epsong gs6000?
8 colors, best printing quality and the deal was with 95 liter ink (100 of 950ml)
All for 17000 pounds.I will update in a month and review this interesting solvent machine.

Nice one. I’m glad you got a solution sorted.

very interesting, the GS from my tests is a good performer.
