  • New printer. Any advice?

Posted by Karl Williams on 28 January 2007 at 22:33

After many problems with the Rocky 38, I have decided to invest in a new printer.
Can anyone suggest a good make? Any advice on the new Mimaki JV5?
I am trying to get prices on different machines as well. The budget I am working on is around £25,000. Any advice is much appreciated.

Been looking at the Mimaki myself. Two year warranty is a big factor!

Best wait for SignUK when a better deal may be on the cards and where you can play with loads of machines 🙂

well the jv5 is amazing bit of kit… anti nozzle clog but then again if its in a clean room with minimal dust then it unlikely to block

depends on your production or sign making requirements

Ive been advised to look at the HP 8000 and am going to Artsystems tomorrow for a demo. Any of you lads using this one?
Apparently the mimaki has a cancer causing chemical in the inks. Can anyone elaborate on this?
I need to get a better machine soon because my wheelie bin, oh sorry Rocky 38 just won’t stop letting us down.

Sorry, just seen an ad from artsystems. Appears this was only released last week!

The world of wide format printing, what a minefield. Anyway, it looks like the Mimaki jv3 is gonna be the one!

The JV3 [although not as fast] is still going to give as good or better results than the JV5….especially on solid spot colours……..

We are currently running 400-600m per week on our JV3. I have
enquired around several suppliers about trading up to a JV5. Virtually
all have advised to hold on, as there are still several unresolved issues
with the JV5. Would be nice to have the extra speed, but I don’t fancy
being a beta tester. Apparently, some people who have traded their JV3s
are now asking for them back. I think a 6 month wait would be prudent
to see how things go with the JV5. The JV3 however, is a brilliant bit of
kit, and I would highly recommend it. With regards too the ‘cancer causing
chemicals’ bit, I can only think of Cyclohexane, which I don’t believe is
in their SS2 ink, although I think it is in their HS2 ink for the JV5. Sorry to waffle, it must be the beer…..

    Cheers,
    Jamie.

    Thanks Jamie,
After talking to mimaki rep he has clarified what you have said. Seems the spandex rep was just trying to push the deal his way.
Anyway, my mind is made up. Mimaki Jv3 it is!
Thanks for all the advice chaps, nice one!
