Hi. My name is Glenn and am new to this site but have been in the signs business for nearly 20 years. I have just got myself a second hand Gerber edge and plotter so I can start out in business for myself.

I’m posting this message really to pick people’s brains out there, looking for advice in starting up and any good marketing ideas.

Welcome to the site Glenn, you will find an incredible archive of information here – just got to find time to sit and read through it all 🙂

Did you work for someone else then befor deciding to go it alone ? What is your background in the industry ?

Sorry I can’t give you marketing ideas tonight – i’m tooo tired for my brain to function coherently (yawn) but keep posting/reading and i’m sure we’ll help you out loads.

    Hello Glenn and welcome.

I’ve only really been on my own for a few weeks now. Like you I have been in the sign business for about 17 years. I asked the very same question on this board a while ago, and the best piece of advice I got was that you MUST talk to people. Preferably face to face. I didn’t like it at first but my confidence is growing every day and I have got a good few decent sales leads from it. Leafleting didn’t really achieve anything. One thing that did though was a newspaper advert. My local paper gives FREE editorial features to new businesses. This not only got me a few enquiries but also created some familiarity when I ‘cold call’ on people.

Hope this is of some help. I’m sure others will have lots of encouraging advice also. They’re very helpful on here.

Hi and welcome Glenn, I thought along the same lines, careful if you pick my brains, I have 2 brain cells. One is lost, the other ones gone looking for the first 😉 😉

Look forward to your input on the boards, and good luck with the new business 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

    Hi Glenn

Nice to have you on the UK Sign Boards.

I see you operate in Hampshire, I worked in Soton for a few years back for BAT, loved the place – not the company 🙂

I started my one man band business three years ago operating from home; best move I ever made.

Theres a lot of really experienced people on here – some of them can even spell :-))

    Ask away.

    Hi Glenn!
    Welcome aboard (not an A-Board)!
I resemble those remarks about brain cells and the lack thereof.
But at least I can spell!
    neener neener neener 😛
My best advice for getting clients is to dye your hair pink & get noticed!
Either that or letter your vehicle…folks will approach you at Tesco’s.
Another thing to try is making yourself some teeny-tiny stickers to sign your work.
Cold-calls and Yellow Pages ads never did a thing for me.
    Good Luck! 😉
Off to start my Letterheads meet. We are expecting a low of 4f tonight!
    Love
    JILL
