Brian, I am no expert on these things, but I have a router connecting all my PC’s in my shed.
My broadband connection runs full speed on the main machine, but half the speed on the subsequent machines.
Not sure if that is my router or my ISP tho.
I’d be interested in the answer too. I had an IT guy out recently and he checked everything was working OK.

how many walls the laptops got to go thru? I think rule of thumb is 2 walls/floors max…
Should be a signal level on laptop, gives good indication of strength.
place router up highest point in house if possible… point arials straight up if poss..
I get about 10mtr range from netgear…. external antenna gives more range but doesn’t like walls.

Cheers Dave/shane for advice ……to be honest im building a new workshop out the back of the house. norma thinks its going to be a summer house come workshop /…eh i dont think so 😀 so just now this comp has had to be brought up from the building i was renting as a workshop …and step daughters lap top is just up in her bedroom …so not miles away .hope it works better when its out the back .Thing is shes away with her lap top just now …and its really slow .Ive even taken the plug out of the back and just working it of the usual modem ..but no affect .last night when i was sending messages to dave rogers & niki half the time they wouldnt go through. So perhaps its a ISP prob …ill phone telewest on Monday 😀

the forum does perform quite slow at time… you can hit submit and wait up to 3-4 seconds before it posts it

Maybe your exchange has been upgraded to 8 meg. Sounds good but the problem is that it’s rate adaptive (or something fancy like that) and for the first 10 days the connection will be unstable while it’s monitored, After that your speed is set at the fastest stable connection.
Trouble is if like me your at the end of the line you’ll end up with a slower connection that before. This happened on 31 March when BT switched off the broadband throttling on a load of exchanges.

Hiya mate
I’ve worked for a broadband ISP for over 4 years now, and to be honest the problems your experiencing would not be linked to an exchange problem.
It sounds like the DNS server or MTU/MRU Settings are slightly out on your Router.
If you can tell me which ISP your with, and the exact model number of the router, i’d be happy to give you all the correct details to fine tune your Router.
Chances are its something very simple that we can correct within a few minutes for you.
Regards
Chris
