Nerves – first part wrap
Posted by Ewan Chrystal on 24 April 2015 at 08:40Getting nervous, got my first part wrap coming in at 10.30. I’m sure it will be fine, getting all my kit laid out just now in preparation. Wish me luck

Best if Luck Ewan….
Take your time and thinking logically when working through it….Plenty of breaks and tea is a must when wrapping!

Ok, here we are. How did it go? not too bad i think for a first attempt. Few small errors, probably over heated a few bits, over stretched a few bits BUT i did make sure everything that needed it was post heated.
Now before i get lynched, i know it’s outside but in my defence, i don’t have indoor space and i did constantly check the panel temp, which thanks to the weather stayed a pretty constant 19 degrees. Biggest problems i had were trying to do the first side in one go, i soon learned that was too big and did the other side in 3 smaller panels. The first photo is the template i cut to give me the line, this was held on with magnets the the wrap cut tape was applied along this line. The other side was a simple case of reversing the template. I’ll use this method again. Next up is the one i tried to do in one big panel. In hindsight this was madness for s first timer. 3.5m x 1.5m was just a bit too ambitious but to be fair i got there in the end. The bonnet was a doddle after doing these big panels.
It was then finished off with Oracal 651, silver grey and matt black.
You might be asking why i didn’t take the wrap round the corners at the back? This was one of the compromises i had to make to keep the cost down for the customer, plus it was mates rates so we both wanted to keep it fairly simple. -
Hi
nice work Ewan, just one criticism why use a mono meric vinyl on top of a expensive wrap vinyl. The monomeric will shrink and leave a horrible glue line. Hopefully won’t effect the wrap vinyl but would definitely advise in future jobs that upgrade to cast vinylsBut as i said nice job

That never even crossed my mind Kevin, however 651 is polymeric not monomeric

Yeah Ewan you are right but it only just scrapes into the range used 551 and 751 successfully for years but as said i would have gone for matching brand and quality. I know some will say they mix all the time but for pennies saved why have the risk of a problem one day.

Point taken, something to think about for the next one, thanks, all hints and tips taken on board

What did you use Ewan (material) for the main part

Was just curious as I done something similar, not as big and used KPMF air release vinyl and found it really good to work with.
Out of curiosity. where are you located Euan

Inveraray, Argyll Bob.
This stuff was really easy to work with and the X Scape air release works well -
Your not too far away, I’m in Clydebank. Was wondering when I seen the Glasgow phone number on the van. Give me a shout if your down this way, the kettles always on.
