  • need some help with text in illustrator

    Hi Folks

I’m trying to create text in illustrator cs3 that has a partial outline to the right of each character. I hope this makes sense. I don’t want all of the lettering outlined. Just want it to look like a slight shadow.

If anyone can help with this and knows what I’m getting at, then you will save me several more hrs of hair pulling!!

    Thanks

Is this for print or will you be cutting it?

    Hi Adele

I think that I understand you. Maybe try this as a solution –

Make 2 copies of the text and give each the colour that you want – e.g. grey for the back text and red for the font text.
Place them exactly over each other.
Select the front text and using the ‘arrows’ on your keyboard, move the front text to the right to create a shadow on the left.

If you need to cut these, use the pathfinder tool on outlined text and subtract the front text from the back.

Otherwise, email me the text you want to use and I’ll do it for you – it should only take a couple of minutes!!

    Regards

    Martin

Thanks for that Martin. Makes sense to me now.

I’m sure I’ll be almost retired by the time I fully suss out illustrator 😕

to create accurate dropshadows from the same text…cmd C (copy)…Cmnd B (paste to back) this will place an exact copy in the exact position of the copied text. Cmnd K (preferences) type in the amount of mm movement you require then simply use the keyboard arrows to move one line of text to the desired position.
Martin already explained this in a similar manner..but the copy to back means you do not have to manually align the objects.
ps Cmnd F = copy to front
