  • Need help on cutter choice?

Need a bit of advice so any help would be appreciated ….

We currently have a VS540 and we need an additional cutter as we would like to start die cutting which would take too much time on our machine.

When we were visited sign uk we viewed a mutoh cutter which I think they said had a die cutting setting, so the guy said it was better than other cutters (like they would) the only draw back to this was that it would not be straight forward (Crop mark – print – put into cutter – cut) we would have to set the whole file (multiples of same artwork) in illustrator which is not as nice as just putting the numbers of copies required into versa works.

So my problem is which cutter should we go for and if I want a simple life is the Roland the only choice and if so (will it die cut and how quick will the cutting strip and blade wear out)

i started die cutting but soon gave up as it took too long and not totally reliable.

i would speak to roland and take a file and laminated vinyl with you, because VW has it all built in.

Mimaki has a die cutting facility and uses a second cutting strip, which is softer than the normal one. I use with a separate blade and holder.
the die cut facility can be customised to make the "half cut" different lengths, depending on the size of graphics you are cutting . the plug in for illy is mimaki finecut, and once you get the hang of it, it is straight forward to use.
