Why is it that Bikers expect me to charge them less to recreate a one off decal than the manufacturers charge for a set "off the shelf"

I had an enquiry this morning and when I asked had they tried the manufacturer to supply them with new decals I was told yes – but they’re too expensive!!

    Just saying 😕

With peace and love to all bikers :thumbup2:

Had it countless times too Phill. I remember one guy saying "but look at the size of them, and your going to charge me that?" he was looking for about 6 sponsors logos to be recreated and stuck up each side of his bike. but each logo had to digitised and recreated. 🙄

    C: Sending you our logo
Me: Thanks, File received, but it only seem to be 200kb in file size, print size is very small, looks like a thumbnail preview, can you send high res file.
    C: Sending
    Me: Nope, still small file.
C: We don’t understand what wrong, files been copied straight from Microsoft Word clipart…… 🙄

    Here’s one from today:

    Hello, can you help

I am looking for someone to produce some stickers for me using the attached image The size would be 60mm X 20mm printed black on clear high adhesive vinyl with as many individual stickers placed on a sheet around A5 size.

Is this something you could do ? Oh and by the way we race model cars in a championship called 540 Racing.

Let me know if anyone wants the contact details 🙄

This thread is great! It’s also happened to me plenty of times.

I had someone call in once with a very intricate graphic down one side of a motorbike, applied new at the factory, but the other side had been removed because of damage and re-painted. He wanted it replacing…..

‘They cost a fortune on eBay, can’t you just scan it??’ Yes mate, normally we just use our scanner for copying A4 invoices, so a 750cc Suzuki should be no problem.

    moron.

Much like a HIGHLY irate customer calling me for everything…

"I specifically asked for an ‘A’ board with an arrow to point to my shop – I’ve got one side pointing left and one side pointing right – rant – rant feckless idiot…"

Me… "put it outside your shop with one side pointing to your shop and if you’re not happy with the other side – the ‘A’ board is free.

    ..Later – a much apologetic customer…Uh, sorry, I’m an idiot…"

In years gone by I was a very active biker. And had developed something of a national reputation for "back to original" bike graphics. It started with a mate’s bike, then a few more restored classics……eventually I was producing rip-off Suzuki and Honda decal sets for the official dealer in town (they waited too long for the originals!)

One day a bloke comes in with a lovingly repaired and polished Yamaha XT500 tank. And a small picture from a late 70’s bike magazine. "Can you do this?"

Me: No problem. Give price, and tell him to collect the tank in 15 minutes. It is only a black vinyl cut decal.

Client picks up the tank. Smiles from ear to ear. It looks EXACTLY like the original! Then he turns the tank around, and his face drops. "This is wrong. The "Y" should be at the front of the tank, like in the picture – and the other side"

I thought he was joking, but soon realized he was dead serious. "You read from left to right, sir" still did not do it. I then took him outside where my Suzuki was parked. "See, one side the "s" faces the front, and the other side the "I" faces front"

Client (now fairly blown-up. "THIS IS FOR A YAMAHA, NOT A SUZUKI"

I am not one for conflict. So I told him to come back 15 minutes later. I mirrored the righthand side lettering. Client looks, and you can see him blush red. "You were right the first time. So I tell him once again to come back in 15.

But I did charge him for 3x the original quote…..he paid, to ashamed to complain 😀

I had a guy years ago call me on a Saturday (when i used to work from home) He was desperate for a banner to go on a float later that day for Christmas parade. He went on and on begging for me to do it. He then said "i have artwork it won’t take you five minutes". I felt sorry for him and he arrived 20minutes later with a business card. I could have cried. Took me over an hour to sort out and then he told me he was £20.00 short on what id asked for. So glad i work away from home now.

    Like this Brian…

Looking at them – you have one left & one right (what his rant was about)…put in front of ‘shop’ as an ‘A’board and they ‘magically’ both point towards it.

yep your right martin thats exactly my point he did infact say it was an a frame one item . Dave didnt say it was panels !! . if the customer is looking at his board and one arrow is pointing to his shop and the othere is pointing to the road then its wrong !! if the guy then phoned him up and and said he had made a mistake then its panels …inserts if you like then i canunderstand that but as i said before we were told its an a frame in which case its been put on wrong at workshop

Brian this is exactly what the post is about…..This is like talking to the customer all over again !!!!!
The customer was given an a board it does not matter if it was put together on one double sided board or two separate panels.
One panel or one side had an arrow pointing LEFT and one panel or side had an arrow pointing RIGHT. THIS IS WHAT HE HAD AND THIS IS RIGHT, AND HE SAID ITS WRONG. What don’t you understand !!!!!

No, that’s not what the guy or I said! – I said "one side pointing right, one side pointing left", not ‘towards & away’ – which is exactly what I supplied on an ‘A’ board hence my need to tell him to put it outside his shop and give him the opportunity to realise that when you stand in front of said ‘A’ board, ‘one left’ + ‘one right’ does actually both point in the same direction. (towards his shop) 🙂

so did you supply flat panels for the guy you put on an existing A frame Dave? perhaps the frame was ok and he just wanted to replace the panels? thats the only way i can think that mistake can happen or did he just take it out of the car and think hang on here ?

    There was NO mistake!!!

I supplied a fully complete ‘A’ board. One left arrow, one right arrow.

If you stand in front of it – that’s what you get irrespective of how they were mounted – you’ll always have, one left & one right.

Put it in front of a ‘shop’ and by the Power of Greyskull I declare that both arrows shall point in the same direction. ie, towards or away from the item.

If away – you turn it round 180 degrees. (Phil’s customer)

get a bit of paper – do a right arrow / left arrow one on each side – point an arrow, ANY arrow towards you and hey, presto…the other one point to you too.

    Really Brian.

Customer picks it up and buggers off.

Customer takes completed ‘A’ board out of his car when 30 miles away and declares in no uncertain terms that I’m a, let’s use ‘flipping’ idiot as he’s just looked at both side of his board and one left, one right.

I, knowing what’s happened decide not to berate him, but rather give him the dignity of finding out that I have actually supplied an ‘A’ board that will point both side towards any object of his desire if he simply point one side, any side at it if he takes 30 seconds, gets off the phone and tries it out. I’m so confident that this revelation will be made that I offer to give him it for free if it’s actually wrong.

I got an apology and I got paid.

I’ve not been free of that basic error myself when making one before by just cutting 2 identical sides and sticking them on…cursing myself and having to fix it before it went out or forgetting to reverse cut window graphics…the list goes on.

Some customers just need to take a minute to think before going off on a rant…I deal with them daily.

I’ve never, ever said you were thick Brian but please don’t accuse me of supplying duff signs, that’s not nice.

EXACTLY!!! Genuinely a case of TWO RIGHTS making a WRONG.

If they BOTH point RIGHT – one will be wrong.

But as I said – I made ONE LEFT & ONE RIGHT…so they are BOTH CORRECT!!!

Never had that problem but then the customer has always seen the A board standing when they have come to collect it.
I have done magnetic arrows for customers so they can change the direction of the arrow if the board is to be moved about, could easily put a magnetic arrow round the wrong way.

…..very good martin 😀 Im well aware of the correct way to produce an A frame board to point the right direction .It was my fault from the start i picked dave up wrong thinking he had delivered the board to the customer and it was wrong. I thought the board was panels that had slotted in and been put in wrong . Ive since said sorry to david my mistake. Just you pointed out in one of your posts that this couldnt be done wrong. you seem to be ignoring my explantion so ill mabe do a drawing for you 😀

If one arrow points left and one points right as the drawing shows and as was stated in the original post then no it is impossible to be wrong. It does not matter which way the panels go in it will not be wrong…..you just turn the sign around ! One points Left, One points Right. The only way you can possibly make it wrong is if both arrows point the same way, and the don’t and they never did so there is no way it could ever be wrong !

What are you talking about ???? This is totally irrelevant…. They never were both pointing to the right. I understood it right from the start ! You were the one defending the customer who was WRONG.
ONE WAS POINTING LEFT AS YOU LOOK AT IT AND ONE WAS POINTING RIGHT AS YOU LOOK AT IT ! Either way they will both be pointing in the same direction when put back to back. Two panels or double sided !

Well yeh….that’s the whole point of the thread hijack!

I did one LEFT & one RIGHT which was CORRECT but the dopey customer failed to get that if they both pointed RIGHT (or left) as you look at them, one would be wrong.

Gee Whizz. No wonder the British Empire shrunk from encompassing half the globe to an island slightly bigger than my grandpa’s farm. If you argue about this, just think how bad any political argument will get….

I’d hate to be a politician in your country!

All this arguing about a simple statement, perfectly understood by me, made by David.

BTW, David, thanks for introducing me to my new favourate say-thing. "By the power of Greyscull" – LOVE it. 😀

I’m going home now. I’m afraid Ill get lost. The roadsign, coming from the South, points to the right. The direction of my house. But coming from the North, it points to the left…..Does this mean I will have to circumnavigate the globe to get to my house, or is it still only 15 miles away 😕

I don’t know why, but for some reason I’m reminded of this saying…
