I have read and heard many a story of people receiving mock up of what they want on beer mats, back of business cards etc etc.

Now, I have been approached to knock something up for a race car. It appears the guy has been sponsered by a local tribute band and he wants their details on his vehicle.

I asked what sort of thing he was after and was presented with the following:

I had no idea if that was just his mock up, whether the colours or font was specific so asked if it was a quick representation or what he had been given as an idea from the sponsoring band to pass on.

I then get presented with a flyer from the band.

He wants something similar to what he knocked up on the bonnet, and on each side of the vehicle. The car it is to go on is an MG ZR. He has a racing number on the bonnet and the doors so doesn’t leave a huge area. I am thinking how can I best layout a design for them. There is a lot of info that they want – most of which I think is too much. A ‘find us on facebook’ sticker with the band name and a number is probably sufficient along with their ‘name’ and a brief description of what they perform.

The mock up he gave me could be a pub sign for all anyone knows, not a tribute band.

How would you guys handle this?

Here is the car it has to go on.

The blue theme is hard to work with the red from the tribute band. Perhaps easiest just to lay up a black background and then add the name and some contact details. But I dislike the idea of supplying a square section when I think it is going to be the sole sponsor. I presume it is a friend of his or similar.

Suggestions of any sort welcome. Thanks 🙂

Next thing will be you can put your name on the car if you do it for nothing.

You’re never going to be a rich bunny getting involved in this type of work in my opinion.

My advice would be the same as Peter’s. Have you spoke to the guy about his budget for this job??

Most of these guys race on a shoestring & will expect to pay very little if anything for sponsors names. I wouldn’t think to much about design before you have an idea what he wants to spend.
If it’s a sole sponsor it may also be because he hasn’t had time to find any others yet but believe me if anyone offers he will take what he can get.

Some good points. I hadn’t discussed money as I wasn’t sure what I was going to suggest complexity wise.

I’l go back and ask about his budget and perhaps mention that will dictate the time spent on it. I can see it now. "What does £20 get me and what does £50 do"

I know this type of work won’t be worth bothering with in the future, but while I am finding my feet I don’t want to turn away oppurtunities.

This is all new to me, so if I can get used to what to ask and specify now with customers I can afford to lose on these small jobs – then if I get approached with a proper job in the future then I will have a bit more experience on how to handle it.

Daniel, difficult one this, I am not saying this sort of work is not worth bothering with at all. I do a bit of work for lads that drive stock cars but it’s nothing fancy, they apply it themselves & I only do it when I have a bit of free time. They never expect to pay much for it & don’t but they understand I will only do it if I have the time & I have odd bits of vinyl I need to use up.

Way I look at it is that these guys either own their own businesses or work for someone else who uses signs so the odd job here & there brings in other work for me.
Only doing it when I have a bit of free time using off cuts of vinyl means that they don’t expect me to do their works van for the same sort of money.

    What Martin said.

re the design, I’d keep it simple and junk most of it.

    "THE CHERRY REDS"
    "Rock Tribute Band"
    phone number,
    website.

no more, whos gonna read it all at 60mph anyways?

Might be an idea to put it on upside down as well if he’s a novice….

    Very good Peter :lol1: :lol1:

I have actually given a few of the stock car boys stickers that say PLEASE TURN OVER for them to stick underneath.

What I would do in your shoes…………

Look when and where the band is next playing. Go and look at them. They play the music of of the great bands. Looks like fun.

Forget about the job. You will enjoy the band more 😀 😀
