Following the ‘Repair, Renew or Remove’ campaign launched by Councillor Victoria Hopkins after the poor state of street signage in the Danesborough and Walton ward of the city, Milton Keynes Council have looked to carry out a widespread ‘direction sign cleaning’ programme across the borough. Specifically targeting direction and speed signs, the council are calling upon local residents to identify signs in need of a scrub. Councillor Victoria Hopkins said: “Some signs are so bad that they are unreadable, while others are downright dangerous. “Apart from the very real concerns over road safety, these decaying road signs often let down the street scene and send out all the wrong messages about the care and pride local people take in our environment.”

A Milton Keynes Council spokesman added: “We have been looking at carrying out a widespread ‘direction sign cleaning’ programme across the borough, which would have meant cleaning about 100 signs.” “We have been asking for people’s views on this, but so far we have received only six requests, which means after the expense of setting up, allocating staff and buying equipment, it would simply not be economically viable for us to proceed, with this small number.” “We’re still keen to hear from people though and they should email envservices@milton-keynes.gov.uk putting “street sign cleaning” in the subject line of the email.”

Councillor Victoria Hopkins has also turned her attention to faded or misleading road markings across the city.” She added: “A comparatively small investment now would help save lives by making our roads and roadside footpaths safer, and would save money going forward in terms of averting the need in the future for what I fear would be unnecessary and far more complex, expensive calming measures.”

Now I do not know about anyone else that reads this, but surely this is a great opportunity for a local sign company to step in and take on this project? Not only getting a lot of work as a result, but getting yourself on the books of your local authority. Problem solve for them… meaning future work spinning off from it as a result.

I see road sign companies occasionally cleaning main hghway signs but there are plenty that are never touched, I assume these go to large coprorates who contract to the highways, much the same as the companies that istall highway signage.

Only yesterday I spotted a huge unit tucked around the corner of one of my customers.. Nordic signs, apparently they’re part of the Lier group and specialise only in highwaytype signage!
