Merson Group has today announced record end of year results as it celebrates its 75th year in business, with a turnover of £26million.

Merson was established in 1938 and is one of the UK’s leading signage contractors. They design, manufacture and install sign systems for blue chip clients in the construction, transport, retail and financial sectors. In January this year they announced the acquisition of the trade and assets of CGL Systems Ltd – a company with 70 years of history specialising in the design and manufacture of cladding and rainwater management systems for the construction industry. Merson was founded by Jim Merson in 1938 as Scottish Neon Products Ltd, later becoming Merson Signs in 1971. Originally Glasgow based, in 1975 the business relocated to nearby East Kilbride and soon after Jim Merson retired, selling the business to Bruce Lyle. Bruce Lyle remained as owner until his retirement in 2005. A management buyout followed, headed by current CEO Roddy Angus. Following the acquisition of CGL Systems in 2012 Merson combined the 2 businesses into a much larger 50,000 sq ft premises in East Kilbride.

Long-term customers of Merson include Volvo, Tesco, BAA, Transport for London, Lloyds Banking Group, South East Trains and TK Maxx. The company has operations in Glasgow, Chessington and Aylesbury and interests further afield in the Gulf Region where they consult on major state infrastructure projects. In addition to continued works for these long-term clients, Merson secured a tender in 2012 to carry out works for Lloyds Banking Group on their rebrand project. Lloyds Banking Group’s new visual identity sees the majority of their branches rebranded as Lloyds Bank with around a third rebranded as TSB, a standalone bank operated by Lloyds Banking Group.

In 2014 Merson plans to further expand by taking full advantage of the newly acquired assets of CGL Systems Ltd and investing a further £1million in capital expenditure and investment programmes. Roddy Angus, CEO of Merson Group, said, "2013 was a very exciting step in the growth of Merson Group and CGL Systems has quickly established itself as a great strategic fit for our organisation. It has allowed us to enhance our service offering, greatly increase our capacity for further growth and benefit from synergies in many other areas. During Merson’s first year trading it recorded £311/11/8¾d in sales, so I’m sure Jim Merson would be extremely proud of our current turnover.”

Merson Signs is supported by accountants and business advisers Johnston Carmichael. Ricky Murray, one of the firm’s Glasgow-based partners who works closely with Merson’s management team, said:“Merson is another great example of a Scottish business that has expanded its reach across the UK and beyond through hard work and innovation. The success in delivering large scale projects has come through its ability to devise a quality design and manufacturing process and roll it out within their clients’ timescales and to their exact specification.”
