I’ve just got back from a takeaway. They want their menu light box relettering (or more precisely the acrylic replacing and relettering) but they want to be able to change their own prices once its been relettered.

I’ve been asked for this twice this week, so I’ve been thinking on it. Is it possible to get a digital print that will stick to the reverse of a clear acrylic, then lay the prices in cut vinyl on the front of the acrylic and supply the customer with a metre of numbers so they can reprice at will?

I know menu boards are the bain of the signmaker’s existance, but someone has to do it. I’d really like to take these two jobs on, but obviously relettering with cut vinyl would be my last option. What do you guys think?

    Cheers, Dewi

hate menu boards and allways over price them so as NOT to get the work. the man hours that goes into them is not worth the small profit they generate. Now if I could afford a versacamm and print on clear vinyl…………mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I have done plenty though and they are a good learning curve.

    Just done one, an internal.

    Polycarbonate sheet from Rightons, about £30 for a 2.5m x 3m sheet

Epson inkjet print onto backlit paper.

Would the job suit small magnetic panels for the price changes?

Thats a good one Chris, how would the magnetic pieces stay on though? I like the idea of a print rather than the cut vinyl, once its laid out, just a case of sending it to a helpful soul with a large format printer 😉

Sounds like a good price for the backing as well, I mean £30! Blimey 😀

Can prints through the cadet be done in reverse onto clear vinyl? Would that be a good option or? Probably have to lay a white vinyl over the back of that, no doubt a bit of a pain, but an option all the same.

You’d have to stick ferric tape onto the menu board where the prices are going to go – then the small magnetic panels will stick!. Depends on your design as to whether this will be suitable though.

The place you get your mag sheeting from should be able to supply the ferric tape.

You could print onto clear, although we have found that for internal signs a backlit paper film printed with archival inks is often better. The white vinyl is OK too, lets plenty of light through – gives an effect on clear polycarbonate not unlike opal perspex.
