MDF Sign: Carpet Market
Posted by magpie on 8 December 2004 at 12:33This is the largest of 5 signs I’m doing for this customer on Exterior MDF.
The building is long and as he has just opened up a Karndean flooring showroom he wanted a more up market look (with a little encouragement). This sign is approx 16ft by 3.5ft 3/4inch(fuzzy on detail) thick. Ali wood primer, undercoat and 2 coats of weathershield gloss. Cut to shape and rounded over by a neighbour (saved buying equipment 😉 and risk of botching it up). Mounted on split batons.
I have to say it was a monster in the workshop and seemed to shrink a little in place, until I recalled all the vehicles that get parked up in front of the building.
Cheers, Pete

Oh yeah, forgot to say he loved it and that I’m quite pleased with it myself, although I would approach it differently next time.

Pete
Looks really smart, can you give me a git of advice, seeing as you have just done this.
Exterior grade MDF, is that what you ask for at the timber merchants or is it known by another name ? I asked a similar question recently regarding “A” boards, Steve Broughton called it Medite but the guy I asked at the timber yard said he had not heard of it.
Cheers

Hi Bob, yep its the same as Steve uses. I had a time of it finding a supplier who knew what I was after, but got there eventually. Persevere is all I can suggest.

Top class Pete! Looks superb! 😀
I know how much work you’ve put into that, bet you’re over the moon its finally up and in place. Did you do the van as well?

Thanks Dewi, yep I am pretty chuffed and relieved, just the other four to finish now 😉
Sad to say though, 12 months into the game and still no vehicle graphics to my name… but wait, whats this… christmas has come early… really?
Yes really cos I’m doing a Kangoo this weekend 😀 So by this time next week Brian will be getting my order for vehicle outlines. -
great work mate, you did well… big signs like that are never easy to fit.
the finish looks good and i realise why you have used medite. thickness & price?
i di a sign with a bit of shape to it like that last christmas, big thing it was and not the easiest to fit. alternatively i used 19mm gloss faced foamex, i found it jigsawed excellent and helped me heaps when it came to fitting because it was light. for colouring you just cover it with some vinyl, very quick and easy.
ill stop rabbling on.. this is a link to it.
http://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.php?p=20573#20573anyway, thanks for taking the time to post your work. seems like your works getting bigger and bigger everytime.
good luck with kangoo 😉 -

Excellent news mate! 😀 Really pleased for you… don’t forget to get a diddy logo of your own on the van and watch the van enquiries come flooding in! Can’t wait to see what you do with it and a Kangoo is a good starter, not too hard but not too easy. Any problems, you’ve got my number, I can always nip up there on the promise of a brew and an eccles cake 😉
Btw, when you say another 4 signs, are they all the same size as the first? 😮 Blimey, you’ll be painting til New Year!!!
Cheers, Dewi

Thanks for the encouragement guys, it really helps to keep me going.
The painting wouldn’t be so bad if I weren’t having to do it in fits and starts (I hate cleaning brushes). The other four signs are 2 @ 5.5ft by 4 and 2 @ 4.5ft by 4, or there abouts so the plan is to microwave my weekends and do lots of jobs at once lol. I just can’t resist chasing up more work when my plates already full as it is 😕 . I just need to be wary of letting anyone down.
Rob I have since thought about how I’d approach this kind of job again in the future and I’m sure there’ll be some instance where I opt for your solution. Although ideally I’d like Aluboard etc. cut to shape but need to find someone in the northwest with the equipment and will to rout 8by4 sheets at a fair price.Cheers, Pete.

Thats what its all about, get all the work in and then work your gonnads off to get it all done :lol1: Least thats my philosophy 😉
When you say Aluboard, what are you meaning? Like Dibond or?? Just a thought, but the vast majority of materials can be cut using a plain ordinary jigsaw and although it takes extra time up, its a realistic solution if you don’t have access to some of the bigger machinery. Or are you meaning to round the edges off on material? Again, could you not use a hand-held router? You can borrow mine for a pint! :lol1:
Sounds like you have your work cut out though mate, you only need to look in my sink at work to see how much I dislike cleaning brushes. On all paint jobs now I price in for a new set of brushes. One day I may actually use the brush restorer I bought, but for now a pack of 5 brushes for a fiver will have to do 😉
Again, good luck with the Kangoo, the first of many! 😀
Cheers, Dewi
