Another recent sign job I’ve been working on, all the letters are made from 1″ ext. MDF and coated with a few layers of paint. Nothing overally fancy. One of the problems I encountered was the shop owner changed the dimensions of the backboard after I’d prepared the letters, making it a good 2 feet smaller in length and about a foot smaller in height, hence the reason for the letters being bunched up. I still think it looks okay though.

Basic swing sign, again, nothing fancy and hopefully this week the window graphics will get done and a few tweaks with some extra vinyl being applied to the roller shutters and around the door.

    Cheers, Dewi

    Looks good Dewi :thumbup2:

I thought I was going to see a huge head aswell 😛

Customers changing their minds after everything is made ready to fit dont you just love them 🙄 ….. we had one last week, sizes remained the same except they decided to change the colour of the painted fascia ….. originally it was black with pale lilac lettering. Arrived to fit the job only to find the sign fascia had been painted purple 😮 we had only spoken with them the day before to check everything was ok for us to go and fit and not one mention of the colour change …… They had not really thought about the fact that lilac may not stand out well on purple? (:) :lol1:

Nice job Dewi, Did you hand cut the letters? if so how long did it take you to complete them?

Thank you for the compliments 😀 Yes, the letters were cut by hand. I used the same method as I used for the foamboard letters I cut out for my shop sign, cutting the letters in vinyl, applying them to the mdf, cut round with a half decent jigsaw, then remove the vinyl.

Unlike the foamboard letters though, it took a whole lot longer to sand the face and edges. I rounded over from the face to the sides on all the letters using a power sander, then used a mixture of sandpapers with a diddy cork block to remove any cut marks left by the jigsaw.

Painting them was also quite a task, I had to paint them with a sealer type material to begin with, then an undercoat, then 3 top coats with some light sandpaper used inbetween coats. I left a day between each coat, so you can imagine how long they took to make 😕

Cutting them out, providing you’re not drunk at the time, is a pretty easy task and took a couple of hours, but the finishing of each letter took considerably longer. I did them whilst I was waiting for things to cut or print, so I don’t know exactly how many hours I spent on that side of things, but it took me all week to complete them doing peicemeal.

Still, it was good experience. I know what not to nod my head to in future 😉 😉

    Cheers, Dewi

Not bad for a beginner. 😉

Good stuff Dew. How’d you fit the letters? Locators?

Solid Northern posidrive screws 😀 The hard headed kind that don’t break under pressure and do their job without all that Southern whining! :lol1:

Was going to use locators, but the owners wanted them flush with the backboard.

    Cheers, Dewi
