  • matching van sides?

    Hi,

this maybe very stupid Q so get ready! 🙄

when signwriting van on panels only, say a transit, if you have business name on the left and contact details on right panel, do you do the same the other side? Reason i ask is one panel is larger than the other, and the business details take up more space, hence i designed them into the larger panel………but when i flipped the van round to do other side, if it is stuck on same way it looks crammed in, if i swap the info round it reads wrong ie contact details to the left and business name to right.

if your not completely lost please give your opinion!!

    cheers 🙂

If we do a van that has two panels we always keep them the same on either side. Also if you put the company logo in the middle panels, one side such as a transit normally has a slidding door so when the door is open you can still see there company name.

I also think this has been mentioned on here before that its a secret rule to keep both sides the same. 😉

    Cheers

DTG, it is, at the end of the day, whatever looks best. It is not a stupid Q at all.

Some designs have a set format, that must, for instance, have the text on the same side of the graphic. For this you have no choice.

As Arch Digital says tho, there is an unwritten rule in some camps that dictate that the sides of the van should be mirrored.

The key to any design is to keep the design problems in mind when doing the initial layup.

That said, you will usually find mirrored designs always look the best, but that is not to say that you should not let the client have some input too.

Ultimately, they have to be happy for you to get paid.

Not much help I suppose, but my thoughts anyway.

    Cheers

My theory is that you can’t see two sides at the same time.
So if I have a van with a window on one side,
I put all the bigger stuff, info etc. on the other side,
and just the logo on the window side.
I do that all the time.
If it is in two panels, I put the services etc in one
and the logo in the other on the bigger side.
That’s when I absolutely HAVE to tho.
My other theory is that less is more,
so I try not to over-letter my vehicles.
But telling that to the client is a whole nuther story….

I always try to signwrite the van left to right as supposedly thats how we read things. But as you say, sometimes the panels are different so what you have on the left panel on side a may not fit into the left panel on the opposite side. But it doesnt really matter, its only personal preference and if both you and yr customer is happy then who cares??

I agree with the Arch-Digital boyo’s, works best like that most times. Keep business name to the centre of the van even if secondary copy ends up to the right of it on the offside.

When doing a load of small text, it is not good to apply over recessess. So if the customer wants his life story in the larger panel then thats the only way to go. If the customer wants his image to be seen as proffesional and consistant, then the image/logo should be designed so that it is the same on both sides, JMHO.
