masking film that doesn’t leave glue on paintwork?
Posted by Andrew McFarlane on August 11, 2009 at 10:44 amHi all
Hope someone out there can help.
I work in a paintshop, motorcycles & helmets (my job), and am having problems with glue residue for paint mask vinyl – particularly on helmets where the work is more intricate and there’s shading.
The vinyls we use at present are:
Spandex signmask grey – fine over laquered paint – nightmare otherwise.
Metamark paint mask – leaves glue but can be removed with panel clean (along with some paint)
Have also tried Spandex "blues" (original light blue from years ago was perfect) but they are worse/no better than Metamark.
sorry about going on so long but new to this.
Regards Andrew

Hi and welcome.
try Grafityp and Hexis. used both and they seem to be OK.

Try Oramask from Oracal. I think the number is 850-something.
I do not spray paint but it works fine with 1-Shot and other lettering enamels.
I also cut masking for my friend down the road who sprays car paint (urethane? House of Kolor?) on custom jobs. It works fine for him.
We tried another mask I think from Avery and the hot paint crinkled it up.
One thing I have found when using making is that it invariably leaves a ghost on the finish of the substrate.
Not glue.
But you can see where the mask was once you remove it, like a haze.

I have just used the Oramask, and as Jill said, it leaves a ‘shadow’, but no glue.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Graeme – will get try your suggestions
Jill & Lorraine – is there a UK distributor for Oramask (searched web but no luck) -
If it’s an Oracle product try Europoint display – 0141 427 6111
-
thanks Phill tried Europoint – they’ll sell me 50 metres but don’t have a sample for me to try- an offcut in an envelope would do – but no! Could order an A4 sheet from Germany in about 10 days tho!
-
We use Oramask all the time. If you would like an A4 sample pm or email me your address and I will send in the post.

I bought a 50m roll and have only used it a handful of times, I’ll sell you some if you want! (once you’ve tried it)- at cost plus P&P. :lol1:

Thanks for the offers – a friendly bunch here!
Colin – I seem not to be allowed to send a PM either because I’m new or they’ve heard about me!
Lorraine – Cost! Cost! – this is a Scotsman your talking to! -
😛 I understand totally, my parents are Scottish!
I have a large piece left over from the job yesterday, so I’ll PM you and send it to you, assuming Colin doesn’t mind!Lorraine

Ah, see the problem, you can’t receive PM’s either. Hopefully you will see this soon, as it will probably get modded, we aren’t supposed to put our own emails up. Contact me on mod-edit Andrew.

Of course I don’t mind – especially as you have the scottish connection 😉

Just an update.
Oramask – there was no glue initially but that changed when paint was applied.
Grafityp – no luck there either
Hexis – very helpful – sent three A5 samples:-
p5200 (light gray) – glue
p2870 (dark gray) – a small amount of glue straight after painting but left for a short time loads
p2880 (pale blue) – 😀 😀 😀 – no glue.
There seams to be a barrier coating of some type (the paints adheres to this masking but not to any of the others I’ve tried) which makes weeding a little harder in the sharp corners & the vinyl a little less conformable – but hey NO GLUE.So thanks for all the advice again ( & Lorraine for the sample)

Thanks for the update Andrew, your conclusions could be helpful in future.

Thanks for the info.
What kind of paint were you using?
My friend has had Avery melt when using a "hot" paint. -
Jill – Mostly we use Lechler ( occasionally Standox ) – automotive paints
