Making Reynobond / Dibond sign
Posted by Dave Glyde on 13 February 2006 at 20:44Just won an order to make a shop fascia sign using Reynobond. Some quick questions :-
1. For a front loading sign do you still fit a hanging strip?
2. What adhesive do you use?
3. what do you do at the centre joint on 3mm thick Reynobond?
4. What methods used to cut the stuff. Also customer has requested the frame be a Panatrim Dualframe but obviously without the electrics as he wants the sign to standoff from the wall rather then be flat, is the principle fitting the substrate the same as standard panatrim?
Thanks
Dave

Not being sarci or funny here,
but how do you manage to win an order without knowing how to fullfill it?
better to ask first, then quote.Peter

Well thanks for the advice Peter, but I have always followed the adage ‘always say yes’ then figure out how. Otherwise it’s a bit like never going swimming till you learn how to swim.
To expand on my own questions I planned on fitting a hanging strip, and fitting a 50mm wide lap joint at the back using Simsonis R 7010 adhesive and cutting it with a fine toothed saw. The aim of the questions were confirmation that from the experience of you old pros this was the best way and if there any wrinkles or things to watch for.
Sorry if the post was a bit basic. No insult intended.

I use the same adage,
I once took on making a TV-spot using 3d studio Max,
Had to do it within 2 weeks, hadn’t seen a 3D program before, but battled through it and learnt it for what I needed it for.same at the moment, I said I’d make a site in flash, with little flash knowledge, so I’m going to hit the books etc hard to learn it. it focuses the mind.

Dave.
My post was a general comment not aimed directly at you.
I have no argument with taking a job on, then finding out how to do it.
But if you quote without doing a bit of research, there can be cost implications, not necessarily in your case, but if extra parts or materials are needed this would reduce the profit margin.
😀 The boards are a very good source of freely available info and advice, so its easy to do the research beforehand..Peter

Totally agree with you, would not dream of quoting any job ‘blind’. To give some background to my original post, we aim to offer a one stop shop for all our customers. We are primarily a workwear / sports wear supply and print business but we offer our customers a full service which includes signs, business cards, printing etc. To this end we have formed a network with key businesses such as embroiderers, screen printers, printers. In this particular case one of our key customers is opening a new premises and gave us a shoppinglist of his needs. The fascia sign was one of the items which we discussed with a sign making company who support us and it was their quote we submitted. Our long term strategy is bring as much as possible in house and this includes signage so that we have full control on quality and delivery. Over the last 6 months we have become more involved in signage and use these boards to the full to learn about the business.
We have always subbed out the use of aluminium composite signs and now want to go up another level and add this to our inhouse range hence the question. If we are not confident of doing any job to the highest standard we will use others but at some point will have to have a go our selves hence my questions which were really looking for reassurance that I am on the right track.
One final point is that not only would I never quote blind but if it involves any site works I always do a full safety Risk Assessment before quoting as it surprising how often this throws up something which can affect the cost.
Still be nice if you could give me some answers on original post.

Hi. We use high strength 3m tape and back the while sign with foamex with a lip on one side for the join area of the sign. We also would screw and fix directly on with 2 foot spacing depending on size weight etc.never had a problem.. I have used in a stand off system with ‘no issues too. I would take on the job yourself it definitely be worth it than sub contracting out. I too learnt the way you have never had a disappointed customer 😉

You asked a friendly local signmaker to prepare a quote for the job (presumable they thought THEY might be making it as I guess they’ve done work for you before)…you used this quote to get the job – then ask ‘us’ for reassurance on how to make it…
just seems, well…a bit ‘off’.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t take on jobs then figure out how to do them – I do that too…always have, always will. But it reads that it’s less about YOU figuring out how to do a job than you ‘acquiring’ a job from the sign company you used to use and getting someone else to talk you through it.
What happens if the sign company enquires if they got the job / why they didn’t…do you tell them – sorry, we just used your quote but made it ourselves…

Haha I reckon your right Peter. If he hasn’t by now then maybe the topic revived may help Lol
