  • Magnetic Vinyl?

I’ve been asked about magnetic signs for a vehicle.. I’ve never looked into magnetic signs for vehicles before because the ones I’ve seen so far have been rather naff looking.

Is it possible to get magnetic material that you can run through a vinyl cutter?

I guess the only alternative is vinyl / print on rectangular magnetic strips.

Has anyone done anything else interesting that I could see for inspiration?

    Cheers,
    Michael

you can cut it on a router, we have in the past… but not something we would do often. mag panels are just that, panels to stick to the car. if you make a nice shaped design it will work, but will be brought back 9/10 time due to cutomer abuse, but want you to repair at your own expence. this happens because once you moved to shaped fancy panels. they tear easy when they are being taken off and put back on. if you cut on a cnc router using a 6mm router bit it "helps" but doesnt eliminate tearing. the reason it helps is becauise even in the corners of a shape, the 6mm bit creates a radious in the corner. if this was cut with a knife, it would be a straight right angle. so can easy start a tear… if that makes sense?

magnetics cannot be too small or they may blue off due to lack of grip in high winds, such as traveling down the mototway.
they cant be too big because they end up crossing a door join or over a ridge, creating a tunnel for air to travel up and whip the panel off.

most of the big vinyl suppliers will stock mag panel on a roll. Grafityp, Robert Horne, Hexis, Andersons etc

    hope this helps…

Yes they can. Some of our customers do it all the time.

Obviously the magnetic attraction is reduced because you’ve increased the distance, but I’ve never known it to go so far as to become a problem.

Magnetics should always be stored flat and kept clean. If they are wanted on a vehicle for any period of time they should be regularly removed, cleaned, and replaced.

    Cheers for the help guys.

One more question then – Can it easily be cut into shape with a stanley blade or such?

I’m not talking about anything fancy, probably just rounded corners or an oval shape or something to make it a little more interesting, without making it easier for the customer to damage?

Yes, although we use a corner rounder on all our magnetics.

Rounded corners or ovals are fine. Just try to avoid sharp internal corners where splits might (will) start.
