  • Magnetic signs and metallic paint problem

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem as we have just encountered.

A staff member wanted to put our company branded magnets on his car, just for added promotional support………

3 months later he has removed them to find the paint is all blistering and the laquer is off.

Now we always warn customers that if the are not clean etc when fitted, and regular re fitting might abrade their paintwork, blah blah etc etc ……….

but what I suspect has happened here is that the metal flake in the metallic paint has started to be drawn and move in the paint surface !! and has jiggered the paint finish.

Has anyone else had such a reaction, or have a better explanation ???

Hugh Potter had a similar problem,

But magnetics should never be left on permanently

I also advise that clear vinyl is fitted to the area the mags will be fitted to protect the paint,

Seen it happen to standard paint finishes too, and not just metallic. There is info and sample documents on this site, you will just have to do a little looking, or buy Phils book :lol1: its in there too…………..

The old care sheets that suppliers used to put in with Rolls of magnetic material always advised against using magnetics on metallic paint finishes as the chips would move in the paint finish…so your explanations not far from the mark.
