  • Magnetic not sticking, advice please?

    Hi,

I’ve been asked my a plant machinery company to provide some magnetic samples.

I supplied two samples (never had issue before) and received the following email back:

“ I have received the magnetic signs in our depot and they look good, but……………………….they don’t stick to the steel of our equipment. I’m thinking that it’s due to the layers of paint, but we have had Implenia magnetic signs on our props that stick perfectly.

Please can you get in touch with the company and ask if they can provide a stronger magnetic material?”

Not sure if anyone can help shed some light or give me any insight as to what the issue may be.

I’m currently making them a new sample with a different motorway grade vinyl. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for any input in advance,

    Levi

I suspect that some of their "plant machinery" is made from aluminium. Before wasting too much of your time ask them to confirm that this is not the case. I’ve had some people asking for magnetic signs for their landrovers before

Played that game many times, just ask customer to test signs on filing cabinet or container and when confirmed working tell them to look for a better placement.

Had cruise company send me an order and payment confirmation for 20 magnetics in large lengths as per website along with artwork, when I curiously asked what they planned on doing with them they explained they were being sent out with a new cruise ship doing a coast tour and wanted the signs to go over the day trip coach livery. I was tempted to continue but did go back to them and ask them to confirm with the coach operator that stretch panels were metal as most coaches now a days are aluminium or fyber, relived purchasing manager came back thanking me and saying they would think again lol.

They claim to have had a magnetic stick before and are blaming the layers of paint when they refurb the machines. Surely not?

Good job you thought ahead otherwise that could of got messy quite quickly!

Still unsure what to do. I wish the company would just have the usual stickers and not mess around with magnetics!

Its really not the ideal product for them but I still don’t think paint could be the reason its not sticking, even with many layers your still going to get some grab from the signs.

Stickers would obviously be the main choice as this kinda kit will go through some substantial cleaning probably by steam cleaner which will destroy magnetic signs with the heat. The only other option I would perhaps suggest was using static cling stickers on the inside of the glass, should hold in place ok so long as inside and very easy to remove when finished.
