  • MacSign to a Summa S140T

    Hi all,

I know I’m a newbie here, but I’m hoping to jump right in and ask for a little advice.

We’ve recently picked up a spanking new Summa S140T. Now the previous plotter I have used is a Mimaki CG-160FX (a great machine). One of the features I loved and which grew to become essential is the step and repeat function achievable through the associated Finecut software. I could print my job X amount of times across the media and then X amount of times down the length of the media, enter those values in finecut and it would go right ahead and cut them all brilliantly.

Now am I wrong to imagine that this would be a fairly basic function of a cutter?

It appears, now that we have the summa in place and cutting from MacSign 9 (full version) that we can cut multiple rows, but not multiples within a row. It will not search for a second copy going across the media, only going down the length of the meda. Is this really true? I couldn’t believe it, but looking through the OPOS dialogue boxes of the MacSIgn software, I certainly can’t seem to find anything obvious that says "Number of copies accross". I’m so hoping I’m just looking in the wrong place.

Tech support here have pretty much dropped the ball and this whole thing is really doing my head in!

I would really appreciate any help, advice or experience you could share…. REALLY appreciate it.

    Cheers,
    Robyn

i don’t known either software but nothing to do with the plotter it was finecut that gave you the option.
can’t see the problem though your design software should be-able to set it up in 2 shakes.

    Hi Chris,

Agreed, the limitation is coming from the software and not the cutter.

And yes, setting it up from the software is a possibility, however for a number of reasons this is a path I really don’t want to go down.

Particularly so when, as you say, the limitation is coming from the software (which was recommended to us by Sales).

Maybe I am out of touch? Perhaps this is an accepted limitation in all cutting software?

    Cheers,
    Robyn

I should add here, I am totally not attached to MacSign, if there was another better software option that anyone has any experience with, I would love to hear about it.

    However, I’m on Mac. 🙂

for example with a graphtec cutter comes cutting master that has what you want. cra&p for every thing else.

if i wanted 25 names i would just lay out 25 off in a area that fits the vinyl press cut. you must have copy move in the design software.

Hi Chris, I appreciate your advice, and yes, this is definitely a possibility, however it is a step back.

It takes a process which is currently fool proof and can be carried out by anyone and introduces an extra step into production and opens it up to a multitude of errors if care is not taken. Especially when you consider that the file needs to be generated to match the print file… (a print environment I might add that operates using a step repeat process).

If this was a one off situation I would most certainly use a manual method to step across the width of the media.

When purchasing this equipment the idea was to improve production.

both my roland and graphtec drivers do step and repeat and the rip print and cut so looks like you need to speak with your supplier.
flexy and signlab will probably do it but don’t know about mac versions.

exactly! I don’t understand how step and repeat can NOT be a standard feature.

Flexi does come in Mac versions and will go down that $1000 dollar path if need be, but after being sold the MacSign full version already by our sales rep, I was hoping to find out that I was just being stupid and that the feature was there all along. 🙂

Yeh.. still using it. Certainly I have some issues with it, but am yet to find a better alternative to warrant jumping ship.

    Empathy.
