Loud Brrrr’ing noise from carriage
So, about a few months ago I had new scan and feed motors installed (by an engineer) on my Roland SP-540V printer.
At first it was all really good and made the printer quite quiet in comparison to how it was before. But suddenly, it stared to make a [grinding / brrr’ing] when printing on higher speeds. I switched off the printer and restarted it, and this seemed to fix the problem. It happened again a few times when printing on a higher speed, and I just restarted it each time (about 3 or 4 times). When printing on my normal speed of 650, it has been totally fine, until today.
It has started to make a very loud humming / grinding / brrr’ing noise on any speed. My usual on/off trick hasn’t worked and the noise is now also there when i perform a sheet cut.
I can tell where the noise is coming from, but it is concerning me and i don’t want to continue printing if its going to cause more damage.
Has anyone else had this at all?

Sounds like the bearings are bone dry Chris, have you oiled the carriage at all?

I haven’t oiled anything to be honest, I didn’t know I had to? How do I do that?

On the to of the carriage where the heads run you will find a groove. With the power out & the heads released, clear out any dust or debris that may have accumulated in there with a tissue & some ipa.
Then drop in 4 or 5 drops of 3 in 1 oil into the groove & work the head backwards & forwards until its oiled the whole carriage. Hopefully the bearings are just dry & not shot, they are quite pricey if I remember correctly. -

A bit more oil then Chris, not to the point where it’s dropping onto the media but it won’t do it any harm
