• lost fonts

Can anyone fathom out my problem:
1st of all i have never had any probs with my computers such as having to re format hard drives etc but why is it when a customer decides to come back to me after say a year or so to have his new van or additional van lettered the same as i had lettered his previous van or signs,
I open the file & the first thing it say’s is “font not found”.

Now i realise that adding programmes will add fonts & removing prog will sometimes take off it’s fonts, but i am certain that i have not removed any software except maybe upgrading Flexisign or Corel.

This problem doesn’t happen every time i open an old file but it’s happening enough times to really annoy me.
Recently before saving my finished files i have “converted to outlines”
to try & get around this problem, this of course will cause another problem as i won’t be able to add to the text if that font goes missing
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    hi john

looks like the particular font your after on your pc is missing or went walkies…somewhere else on your pc, try searching for it then put it back in the fonts folder 😛

what i do to prevent this, i have every pc loaded with all my fonts on disk so the programme knows where the fonts are and they never go missing !! 😀

    Hy Nik,
thanks for the advice, but i maybe didn’t quite explain properly, it’s not just one font gone missing, at a guess I think it’s approx 8 missing so far.
Would you happen to know why they go missing?

You say you “load yours on disc”, does this mean you have disc with thousands of fonts on it! if so may i ask where you acquired it from as i could make use of that idea.
    thanks for your help,

lj, computers are a dilema, believe me 😀
If you have a system recovery match the date of the customers last vist with what you did that day and think about recovering to that date. It may work.
Maybe you should also think about getting some web space where you can park fonts for your own use or do as nik suggests and burn them to a CD-RW.

Not much help I know but my meagre two penneth worth.
    Regards

    hi john

as far as i know if your software cannot find a font, the font is gone, but to explain why…is a long shot everyone uses their pc’s different and it could be a multitude of things….the joys of pc’s!! 😛 maybe this has happened to someone else and they can help you out more!! 😀

on the issue of fonts to disk, i collected all my signlab and ttf fonts from other disks then burned them all as a (start multi-session on cd-rw) so everytime i get more fonts i can continue burning to the same cd, i hope that made sense john 😮 anyway it’s a great way to keep all fonts together and saves your pc being clogged up!! 😀

It’s also true that the less fonts you have on your HD the less clogged up it will be and the faster it will be.

Andy + Nik, good ideas thanks.
The idea about the web is good except where i am based is just at the extremes of BT’s land line range, NTL hasn’t got that far & won’t be, so about 15 business’s on the same trading estate have got fed up trying to run a business without the Internet so have got together & organised a firm to install a big sat dish in the middle of estate with a small dish on our unit roofs aiming at the big dish.
This should be installed end of this month. So in the meantime i have to wait till i get home at night to use the Internet.
