looking for ideas please for traditional pub sign?
Hi Guys,
I am doing the signs for our local free house pub ‘The Angel Inn’.
The size of the signs has to be the same as the old signs 72" x 24" (in old money), the customer has chosen a colour for the boards, a V dark blue (Mactac 9839-19) just 1 step up from black! Also they like the body text to be cream (9829-01)
I am trying to give the signs a traditional pub sign style with drop shadows & florishes, just wondered if you have any ideas please, I have posted a couple of my ideas.
Not sure what the ‘sign makers law’ is with regards to drop shadow colour especially on a dark background.
The next sign to do is the hanging sign with a cheeky cherub/angel image (Maybe I’ll use Mike the Signs cheeky little face), but I’ll leave that for another day!

I prefer the 2nd one with the blue drop shadow, make sure you centre the “the” though….

you spotted the off centre ‘THE’…. 😳 Whoops!I have posted a close up of the signs, not sure what’s happening with the cap A, there should be shadow in the ‘A’ centre, think its software problem, I was going to put red drop shad on the ‘guest’ sign but I thought it was a bit heavy, so opted for marroon.

I prefer the first one Steve, looks a lot clearer and classier, also the third one I’d do in upper and lower case letters as it appears too tight all caps, also have a shufty at this website it might give you some ideas.

I don’t often do this but I concur with Steve on all points 😆 😆
Burgundy is a good choice as red would be too clashy against the blue

Yes Steve I too go with Steve 😮 on the first one but I wouldn’t extend ‘ANGEL INN’ so much, it makes it look as if the ‘The’ is trying to push it off the bottom of the sign.
And if you don’t go for upper and lower case on the bottom one try putting all the wording on just two lines, that’ll give the text more room to breath.Any help?
Or you could just tell me to get lost 😥Alan

Steve, John – I also liked the burgundy shadow on its own, but I wasn’t sure it would stand out enough, I didn’t want it to be missed. Thanks for the websites Steve, a mine of inspiration!!!
I will try upper & L case, but most pub signs are caps.Alan – You’re right, I was just trying to hard to fill the sign board, it’s a pity I’m stuck with this size, there are existing heavy duty lamps in position so I’m governed by what signs were there before (the pub was originally called ‘the ANGEL” so this fitted better on the old signs, now the new owners think it sounds better with the added ‘INN’ 😡 )
It’s a bugger the word ‘accommodation’ has to be used, why not ‘guest rooms’ or even ‘B & B’!!!! …..NOW then, what do you think of this image for the hanging sign?? Do you think Mike the Sign will mind? I think he looks quite cheeky (angel)
