These types of Jobs always give me a few sleepless nights before hand (maybe it’s my age – it never used to bother me before).

This job was in a large indoor shopping centre and had to be done out of hours.

The main problem was the size of the sign. It’s an illuminated signbox with opal acrylic panels. The overall size of the box is 5M and was supplied in one piece. My biggest headache was how to lift the box into position to allow the fixings to be put in.

The second problem was access to the shop front. The nearest access was a front entrance some 2-300 yards from the closest parking. This meant we had to carry the box and all equipment through the shopping centre before we could even begin.

I hired a genie hoist to lift the signbox into place – This is a wonderful piece of lifting equipment but is extremely bulky and heavy and this also had to be transported through the centre.

We were told we could get access from 7pm this evening (once the shopping centre had closed). So I dilligently set off in my van this afternoon and hired the genie hoist, when I got back to the unit Alison informed me that she had just had a phonecall to say we would not get access to the shopping centre without submitting an appropriate method statement and series of risk assesments. By now it was 3.30pm in the afternoon and it was beginning to look like we wouldn’t get the job done today. However, Alison quickly crafted a Method statement and series of risk assesments based on templates that we were able to source from the UKSB. These were emailed off to the centre management and they quickly replied granting us access to carry out the fitting this evening.

By 7pm we were on site and spent the next hour carrying equipment and signs to the shop front. By 8pm work finally began installing the main sign and by 10pm the job was completed.

I’m literally just back home now feeling slightly elated at a job well done (I’ll sleep better tonight).

The credit union has a lot of support from our local MP and Council. Formal opening is this Friday with press and local dignitaries in attendance.

    Here’s a couple of pictures.

    My heart would have sunk.

    Woudn’t know where to begin.

The fellow playing "air guitar" with the broom is one of the directors who was clearly pleased with the work we had done.

The young fellow with the cheesy grin on the RHs of the picture is my son Michael who keeps me in check 😕

    Looks good to me!
I don’t do jobs like that, the closest I have ever had was making signs (uninstalled) for a large local park.
It took 9 months to complete all the signs. Talk about worrying, it got so bad that I had to get a prescription for sleeping pills.
But I got them all done and delivered.
Followed the diagrams to the very letter, all in Arial. (ugh)

It was nearly a full year before they even installed them.
However, the township work crew who installed the signs did not follow a single instruction and every sign looks like sh!t.
You would not believe how they butchered the signs, literally sawing some of them in half!
    🙄
    Love….Jill
