Sign chat… is it really needed?
If the answer is yes then I will bring it back shortly.
    But seriously ask yourself..

Can you make it most weeks?
Do you think this really will help you more?
Is it just the novelty of having it that appeals?

When we last had one I was of mixed opinions.
It was good fun yes, but to me got boring after a bit due to being a little unorganised & folk not taking things seriously enough.
I would see posts on the main site message board system drop a lot on the chat night. So in a way the message board system suffered.
The good thing about the message board is there is always something left behind for everyone to read up on when they next visit the site.

Anyway.. Lets here some opinions now & we can see…

I have been looking at some chat facilities and have found one or two that may cost me a fair bit more than others but eliminate tacky pop-ups adverts etc that free chat boards have. Purchasing one also offers me various functions to be able to make it all more enjoyable for everyone all round..

    No adverts/pop-ups
Various chat rooms at one time.
    Word filtering
Banning control by ip address, user name etc
    Private chat between two users
The chat may be integrated to the uksignboards which means that means your own username and password for the site will be acknowledged & entry allowed.
    colour preferences etc
    Emotion icons..
    Sounds and much more….

Ultimately what I wish to do if I decide to do this is each week or every two weeks have a chat night covering certain aspects of sign making. Say one night questions and answers on making a light box & so on.. The list could go on. But what we need to decide is… do we really need one? 🙄

Don’t think we want the message board to suffer
Most of us are very busy people and just manage to find a small niche in our time to log on and catch up with the natter. Even then we sometimes lose track of whats happening if we don’t log on regularly.

The way it is at the mo’ is that if anyone contributes a post it is in most cases a meaningful, well thought out post that he or she feels will contribute to forum. I think a certain amount of quality is maintained in this way.

Most chat rooms are filled with idle chatter as people run out of stuff to talk about. It could easily take a downward spiral into degenerate talk.

At present we have a well behaved forum of guys and lasses who abide by the site rules and code of conduct

Why not just register a channel on an IRC server , seems that doing the browser chat thing would be a LOT of extra work for you.

Just put a link to MIRC or some IRC client that the user can download if they aren’t IRC savvy. I mean we operate puter based machinery – I don’t think it would be a strain to work out IRC 😉

I’m online (obviously not at the puter) 24/7 and its really nice to be able to chat to some of the “faces” that post – Personally , I really hate those browser based chat aplets which are generally slow.
I’m involved with a high end audio board similar to this – our IRC chat channel is really popular and it doesnt affect posting qulaity or quantity.

I use Mirc (IRC) for my gaming , it is pretty easy to set up and it’s FREE 😀

what is also handy with Mirc is you can file share as well, which is pretty handy.

If it would be a usefull tool to add-on to the forum i realy don’t know. I think things work very well just as they are, but sometimes it is nice to just be able to chat in Real Time.

if you want to have a further look at MIRC here is the link http://www.mirc.com/

and I can always help with it if you wish as I do use it quite a lot and have had dealings with setting up groups ect.

but tbh i do think things work well as they are.

I used to love the Thursday night natter. Sure it wasnt always 100% about signs (Sometimes we barely verged onto 1% signs 😀 ) but it was nice to chat to everyone and catch up with whats happening around the world.

Chat would/could never replace the message boards but its just nice to have the option there. As the others said maybe something that doesnt cost the earth might be best.

I think it would be great to something like the IRC where we could just meet at anytime of the day, pop heads in and see whos about.

I don’t think it will ever replace the boards and having a specific time for chat can be a pain especially when it’s on a day you can’t do!, and also a lot of hard work to organise specific topics

Yup Quakenet is used for gamers….

I can always set a channel up and see what goes on from there if you want.

Once we get “L” we can password it so only the board members can get in ect.

Let me know, or if i’m oversteping my mark let me know 😕

If it was a one on one video link or if you could split the screen and see and talk to say twelve at a time it would interest me – as a chat room stuff it if i need to talk that bad I pick up the phone.

It could be a good thing providing the boards do not suffer.
I like the posts but chatting live may just put a different slant on things,

Well having read these posts I think ill hold fire on the live chat.
I have some new bits and bobs being worked on just now so it’s better
I spend any funds on that rather than blowing a few hundred quid on
    Something that really isn’t needed.
Thanks for the honest replies.. Helps me to no end.
Again, I do think the board suffers a little on chat night. Before there was only a few posts made on the Thursday (chat night) now its one of the busiest nights for posts..
Monday – Thursday is the busiest days. Saturday and Sunday is very slow.. Probably coz us brits are out at tescos or in the pub.

I will be adding some new forums. One will be an auction forum. Specially modified to cater for auctions. The auctions will probably be run every 2 months. When the auction is finished the forum will disappear until the next.. It will always be there, just you want be able to see it.

I will be adding a supplier forum. In here suppliers will be able to make 1 post to advertise their products. (At a cost of course) sort of like the classifieds ads you get at the back of the magazines.
The reason I decided this is because of the amount of folk asking. Where can I buy this and that.. so this should help some…

The shop is currently being changed and new products being added.
Shortly, you will also be able to start buying mikethesign clipart! Ready to download at the click of a button.

There will be a new scroll list on the home page. This will replace the polls for now.
ill call it “best of the best” basically all the best posts from all forums will appear in here… old and new. This should revive some great stuff posted from last year.

Im hoping to have everything 100% complete for December. That way I can get back into the demos and also start making the videos for steaming online video demos.
Again. This will be a new forum, made to cater for this… i will be doing a bit of everything i hope. from vinyl app to digging to constructing a light box & so on.

    😀
