Lightbox suspended off the ceiling advice needed
Posted by Deleted User on 3 November 2009 at 22:38We are preparing a 16ft x 2ft lightbox to be fitted in a local pizza shop as a menu.
the problem is this lightbox need to be suspended off the ceiling as this is what the customer wants, i presume we will have to use chains to do this?
Any help will be much appreciated on the best way and bits needed.
Thanks

I would think the best way to fit would depend on a few different things like type of ceiling, distance from ceiling to box.
I’ve done a few for takeaway places and have used different methods. How long is the box because another thing to consider is that if it is quite long and designed to be fitted on a wall then there is a chance of it sagging in the middle if not constructed properly or supported properly.

Hi Ali
I just did a small one that Applelec supplied and they put on welded "legs" with base plates for bolting in to the ceiling, this might be a better option than chains as it won’t swing.
cheers

I’ve done ’em that long before. Just make sure you spread the weight evenly over at least 4 suspension points. Chain is uglier than wire but is definitely never going to get damaged by any occasional movement. My main concern would be finding the appropriate fixing to go in the ceiling. What is the ceiling made of?

We do large light boxes like these. The way we usually attached them is by a threaded rod that goes into the top of the light box and then into a brace which is above the ceiling.
A sleeve then goes over the threaded rod hiding it from view.
What we do is (in the case of a Veranda sign) is to remove part of the roof structure to have a look and see what’s up there to fix into. We’ve found that it’s easier to remove a roof section if it’s corrugated or steel so we can see what is up there.
The nice part of this sort of fitting is that there’s no visible fixings.

Just had another thought. This is one fitted like Warren advised. We couldn’t get above the wooden panels as above this shop front there was a balcony for an apartment and it was tiled.
I got the legs made with the brackets fixed at the top but moveable at the bottom. I did this so I could adjust the drop of the sign so it was level.

Hang on Ali, (pardon the pun ;-))
you’re looking at putting up a very large hanging light box which for most of us would be a challenge having years of experience, and you’re asking about eye bolts?
Are you biting off more than you can chew with this job?

Deleted User5 November 2009 at 11:27well the ceiling is concrete so i was thinking of maybe drilling sleeve anchors with hooks into the ceiling in 4 places which should be strong enough then drill 4 eye bolts onto the lightbox then attach using chains.
the lightbox is 20ft but it made in 2 10ft sections if thats any help
