Light Box… help please
Posted by Gavin Conway on 6 July 2010 at 10:57Hi All – I want to make a light box and need to know if the glass / perspex top should be opaque or clear.. also is a fluorescent light good enough?
I eagerly await some responses… Thanks Gavin

Glass no no no. As Tim says the opal will diffuse the light otherwise you would have more noticeable light areas in front of the tubes. Fluorescent tubes are cheaper to purchase but more expensive for the customer to run. The opposite is true of LED’s…..

Hi all…. I seem to maybe have called my item by the wrong name…. 😳
What I mean as a Light Box is for me to use for layering purposes… I don’t do a lot of layering but am slowly building up my workload and want to build one to use.. Maybe this will help on some replies for the correct item!! Cheers gavin

I use a light box for layering, but the
other way to do this, by using clear application tape, -
hi gavin
i think hugh potter made one for his workshop
some fluorescent tubes under the bench with a piece of reinforced glass inset into the top i have a one similar which was a printers viewing box i put a piece of glass on top it has an opal panel underneath so its not too bright ideal for overlaying vinyl
hope this helpsderek

Thanks guys… I made one at the weekend… looks like a coffin with some perspex on top… made it a bit too deep though – realised too late so just put the bulbs a bit higher up.. I had a pile of low energy long life 75watt bulbs and put 6 of them in… looks like a good enough light so will test it sometime. I have some glass frosting aerosol spray so will try a sample of this on some spare perspex to see if I should make the top opaque… ?? !! Just trial and error. About using clear app tape… I do use it but my cutter is not the best quality and on a long sign I need to re-align a bit from the registration marks…
Till the test then…. thanks again for the advice – Gavin
