  • Leaving my Versacamm unsed for 3 weeks, advice please?

Posted by Stuart Green on 24 May 2010 at 19:19

I will be going away for 3 weeks and wont be using my Versacamm. My ultimate fear is something going wrong when I switch the machine on again when I come back.

Is there a way to ensure that nothing happens such as the heads getting blocked during the period when the machine is inactive? Will keeping the sub on/off switch be okay so the machine does a self clean everyday?? or will this not suffice?

    thanks in advance. 🙂

It all depends on the inks you are using. If you are using full solvent inks it will need regular cleaning. But if you were wise and use ecosol-max inks you will not have any problem.

We leave ours for a fortnight during xmas and it has always been fine. Eco sol max inks and self clean every day!

    Totally agree,

I work abroad quite a bit with a 3 week stint coming up.

Our machine uses Ecosol max inks and I leave that just using the self clean and its fine…. touch wood.

I am probably totally wrong but, I think if you use solvent inks and give a really good clean before you leave it, with it’s self clean every 12/24 hours it should be fine, as long as your bottle is empty when you leave!!
expect someone will say you can’t do that, we never have but not been lucky enough to go away for 3 weeks 😀

    Thanks guys!

Answers i was hoping to get 😀

Should it be the case that I leave the machine for another few weeks (more of a future reference query) I take it I can just go back and do a thorough head clean so for example comeback after 3 weeks, switch the machine on and do a thorough head clean and go away for another say worse case scenario 3 weeks. I take it that should be fine?? Just more of a "should the case arise in the future question".

    Thanks all!!

You can leave your machine unused for ages as long as its plugged in and turned on at the switch. Lynn is correct your machine will auto clean periodically.

When you come back do a test print. If you have any blocked nozzles do a normal clean.

One thing I like to do before I leave my machine also is to do the maintenance cleaning procedure and wipe around your heads, clean your wipers and around your cap tops.

Better then letting dry ink sit there for weeks.

I have a UPS to maintain power to my printer. We get so many trips in the supply and it only needs a quick loss of power for the Versacamm to trip off.

Like has been said, maintenance housekeeping before going, leave switched on at wall, Eco-sol Max inks, switch on & test print on return-not had a problem so far. (Fingers now tightly crossed for talking up problems!)

Ha ha, yes, that’s what I wrote at first and the spell checker kept chucking it out! Anyway, you get the gist..

UPS – one of the best things I’ve got, we get power cuts periodically, only off for split second sometimes but enough to reset a computer. UPS takes over, no problems, no lost work or corrupted files – priceless.

UPS all the way, got my cutter, plotter and computers on them. Just match the size to the current consumption of the kit you plug into it. Most double up a surge protection and will have the added protection of hefty insurance cover if something does blow due to a power spike :lol1:

Any reccomendations of a supplier of UPS. I’d like to protect my versacamm, just had notice of a power cut during our shutdown.

Thanks David, any other recommendations not keen on buying from there?

    Any reason why not?

I regularly buy a couple of thousands worth of kit a year from them – what little I’ve had to return (couple of duff DDR modules) I’ve never had an issue.

Alternative sources – DABS, Maplin or maybe that auction site at a push.

Can obviously be bought from PC world / Office World and the like – but twice the price and no better warranty.

Thanks David, I looked at Maplins but should have used the google search function. I’ll pick one up tomorrow.

    Many thanks
