  • Layover days – night shift to day shift transitions

    Hi All

We charge our customers layover days when we complete night shift jobs to account for the loss of our resource the next day as they transition back to day shifts.

I haven’t come across too many other sign makers charging this but in certain industries, it is common practice and of course is sensible to do so.

Our rate is less than a normal day rate as its lower overhead business, that said we lose the opportunity to have them working on higher-value jobs for a day.

I’d be interested to know how others arrive at their layover day rate if they charge one. I’m not after the £’s value, more what considerations they have factored into the charge, and whether they charge less, the same, or more compared to the regular day rate.

“inherit”>We seem to be switching back and forth between day and night shifts with ever-increasing frequency so I’m trying to review all costs in light of increasing material input costs and accelerating general inflation.

Funnily enough, the team really like finishing the night shift working on Thursday evenings for a layover day on a Friday.

    Look forward to your comments

    Cheers

    Dave

An interesting point that i haven’t given much thought to for a while, but maybe i should have!
There is only me and two others out doing installations. I don’t often do night shift or back shift, if i can help it. but sometimes i sub myself and the lads out to larger companies.

Made up an example of what i charge customers.
Day shift per man rate £30
Back shift per man rate £60
Night shift per man rate £90
