I would appreciate your opinions on which type of engraver to purchase laser or mechanical at the moment Roland have kindly let us have one of their EGX350s on demonstration of which we are pleased with but feel there are a few limitations. We would mainly be using the machine for cutting shapes and engraving laminate, wood and plastic all of which we have been doing with the Roland, however when reading about lasers it appears that you can do alot more with them ie fabrics leather etc. Your views and opinions would be appreciated.

Swings and roundabouts. Each has their own market and as such you need to know yours. I do mechanical engraving, and the majority of the work I do cant be done by laser. There is work I could do with a laser, but I couldnt justify the outlay for anything under 1.2 – 1.6m bed.

If I was buying another engraving machine to start with, Id go with a slightly larger flat bed (about A3 size)

    Hi Kevin,

As Graeme has said you’ll do things on both that you cant do on the other. We’ve got a few mill engraving machines, a laser and sandblasting equipment. Each has its own market which are all prosperous ones but I think it comes down to where you intend to sell.

However, for flexibility and easy learning curve I’d go for a laser.

    Hi Kevin

Speak to one of the guys at Identify Engraving Systems. They sell both mechanical and laser systems and can quickly go through the pros and cons. Gut feeling response from me is:

    Mechanical for:
Brass plaques, metal corporate gifts, durable plastic signs, V Carving house and company nameplates, industrial labels, profiling and controlled depth cutting plastics.

    Laser for:
Acrylic and other plastic profiling, photo engraving micro plastic, badges, wood surface engraving, leather and flat glass.
