  • Laser cutting mirror dibond

Posted by Warren Beard on 20 March 2009 at 13:31

    Hi All

I have a crest that a customer wants cut from mirror dibond, there is some small detail but not overly intricate, I was wondering if best to laser cut and if anybody has any recommendations on who to use?

    cheers

    😮 :lol1: Don’t think so Steve 😕

There is a large dragon on it and has some detail in it to make it look like scales so need some small pieces cut out the inside of it.

    Overall size is 582 x 618 mm

    cheers warren

Maybe try an engineering firm with a flo-jet.

i use one local to me for doing odds & sods. The detail level is fantastic – and totally crisp edges too.

I just spoke to one local to me and he can do it but has to have it supplied as a cad file and he told me it has to be designed in cad and cannot be converted from Illustrator as it does not work 100%.

how have you done it in the past David?

    cheers

I’ve usually sent them an EPS.

nearly every CAD program can import that and convert to it’s native format.

That’s what I asked him and he said no, he said when he imports it in to cad it does not come out 100% 😕

I have an alternative plan I might be able to sell my customer on so will try tat first otherwise might ask you for your suppliers details if possible.

    cheers

warren, you cannot cut dibond on a laser it will melt, why not laser cut mirror stainless steel, brimark recently cut some lettering and a logo for me – looked really good

If your looking for alternatives Warren, then how about mirrored acrylic, we’ve cut that on our laser in the past so I know it can be done.

    Chris.

Thanks guys, have spoken at lengths with Fabricut and they can do it but minimum cuts are 3mm so would lose a fair bit of detail.

I have been investigating mirrored acrylic (thought about it afterwards 🙄 ) but is the same issue regarding detail.

Still waiting for a reply on waterjet cutting which might still be an option (thanks for the offer Alistair, will let you know)

And after all this the customer came around this evening and told me they now want brushed aluminium composite 😕

I have suggested a solid shaped panel with vinyl applied to face and stood off the wall, waiting to hear from them and will get samples made up.

Thanks for all the help and will post the resolution 😉

    cheers

3MM CUT ON A LASER? Surely thats a router?

Just get it laser cut in satin stainless – job done

yeah that was me thinking it might be possible, (laser, are those hot 🙄 :lol1: )

If they don’t want to go for my latest suggestion and they now want brushed it will more than likely be the next best option to laser cut brushed stainless.

    cheers
