  • Lamination recommendations please?

    Hi ya

If you print in reverse on clear vinyl and apply it to a window, have you in effect laminated the graphic and therefore prolonged the life of the image from fading in sunlight? or will it fade at the same rate as as printed on the exposed side?
    Cheers 😀

I’m guessing that you would prolong the life of the print placing it inside the glass rather than outside. I recall being taught that glass reduces UV radiation but allows light to pass through – this supposedly means you can not get a sun tan if you sunbathe behind a window. So I’m guessing that the same principle applies to prints.

However, posters etc. placed in shop windows (behind the glass) often fade very quickly as do some cloths which seems to contradict the above. So I’m really not sure 😕

It will fade at the same rate, technically, unless the glass is slightly tinted to reduce heat and glare, which would have a UV inhibiting effect

If you laminate the printed side, it will help reduce fading from the printed side tho, extending the life over a non laminated film

I was just wondering that , because you have printed in reverse , which will be the side not stuck to the window, does the clear vinyl itself offer any protection? If that makes any sense

I think there is a certain combination of both Phill and Shanes answers to be correct…
i think it depends on the glass uv filters. some i guess have none, while others have many…
a bit like a regular clear vinyl laminating a print WILL extend the prints life from a certain level of UV stability but more so from scuff and abrasion.
then there is purpose made lamination films which will have UV stabilisers and the like combined with the extra abrasion guard.

When you think about the "interior" application to the window. all seems well… however, what about the dippy cleaning lady that will attack your prints "from the inside" of the window every other night on her cleaning round?

So what your saying is that even if the sun doesn’t get them, they can still get ‘charred’ from the inside 😀

I think you’ll find glass (and water) magnifies the UV and the resulting effects, which is why you will get sun burnt quicker behind glass and when you are swimming.

Rob is right in his ‘cleaning’ assumption too :lol1:

Hi Sorry I’ve breached the rules. Where should I have put the topic and what should it have been called. Just seen the notices at the start now, all at once

But she will not be cleaning the print, only the white vinyl…

I’m getting confused she would be cleaning the back of clear vinyl in this thread………….When I walk out the door nobody else existed they just arrived at that time because when I pinch myself it hurts 😀 😉

I agree, but then again, I am biased,
two socks, may be better than one, unless you are in Douglas Baders shoes…

If you print it onto uv laminate then it would work.
