lacquer coat on top of 3M 1080 failing. help please
Hi All, I did some decals for a local body shop. They were repairing a fender on a Benelli Motorbike. The only colour match i could find was 3M 1080 Anthracite. The original fender had the decal fitted then clear lacquered over the top of the whole fender, However the 3M is throwing off the lacquer coat when he tries to apply it.
Is there a solution to this problem? -

Sorry, its not throwing off the lacquer. Its lifting and bubbling along the edges. I’m beginning to think its installer error. He fitted them himself. What do you think?

looks like quite a lot of bubbles in there, either that or whatever his laquer is, it’s getting under the sides and reacting with it somehow. I supply thoughsands of labels which go on fishing rods and they’re always laquered over with varnish or a spray laquer, have never seen this issue.

The black number are just Oracal 651 and they are perfect. The grey is 3M 1080 with air release. Ive suggested he hasn’t applied enough pressure when applying leaving gaps in the adhesive that have allowed the lacquer to seep under?

that might be the case, all my cut vinyl stickers are 551 oracle. I generally try to specify ‘non air release’ to my trade printer when having small stuff done.

looks like the solvent in the laquer attacking the vinyl.
i used to spraypaint and i know not everyone mixes laquer paint etc as per instruction.
i used to put extra thinner in it as i preferred the finish, additives also to help quick drying.
whenever i had bike parts to paint i always put decals back on top of the laquer as i was weary of the above happening.
although the bikes do come with laquer over the decals, who knows what they use on those places?

they are putting the laquer on too wet, they need to dust coat it to seal it then flat before finally applying top coats.Kev

He’s done another with a bit more pressure applied to the vinyl at fitting and seems to have sorted it. Thanks guys

Kevin is right, this can happen with factory tank decals which are like water transfers, the painter need to put a dry gripper coat on and allow time for that to flash off before a full coat, also the other comment re thinner if too muck is added however I would think the painter would follow manufactures spec, Rich
