  • Keencut Excalibur 5000? Opinions please?

Posted by Keith Hoy on 8 October 2005 at 18:35

    Hi

First post, am considering buying the Keencut Excalibur 5000, the main material to be cut is 3mm Alupanel, the other material is pvc foam 3mm and up to maybe 12.5mm. Also considering other KeenCut products.

Do you think any of the Keencut products are suitable for me? Or can you recommend alternative panel cutters. Accuracy and squareness are vital, ideally would like to use a sheerer because of the neat ‘soft’ edge to the cut, if there is one that is reasonable price.

Am located in the Peckham SE15 area of London, anyone within a reasonable distance who uses the Keencut or other machines? And could I come to see it in operation.

Kieth, welcome to the boards, it would be nice to know a little more about what you are doing to be able to make proper reccomendations. I’m sure there are members on the boards who use the cutters you are asking about. I’m afraid I dont so cant advise on which is best. I use a panel saw to cut allmost all my boards and although it does a great job on cutting everything I use ( I have a couple of different blades for it) I struggle to cut small size boards accuratly and it produces a lot of dust which could be a problem if you dont have enough room to keep it seperate from vinyl production areas. If I had the money I would probably look at the excalibar as it cuts cleanly without producing the dust and it is robust enough to cope with everyday use, it doesn’t cut everything I use but would do most substrates.

    Hi mate,

I have a 2500mm kleencut unit, no good for alucabond, but really good for fourex. I have put my name down for an excalibur too, but at over $au3000 am baulking at the expense. Probably buy a festool or similar after reading some other posts here, because the only real downfall of the excalibur is the cut hiegt limitation. Most of my work is in longer cuts, say cutting a 2400 x 1200 sheet down to 2400 x 600, and an excalbur is useless for that task.

I’ll probably still buy one later, but the festool will get me out of trouble in more instances.

I have been looking for something similar. Steve Geary sent me a link to Han-D-Cut–He saw it at a recent show and said that they were going to come out with a saw attachement to cut alumilite and similar. There is a video on the site so you can see it in action.

Not sure what the availablity is overseas.

I’ve got an excalibur (the one below 5000, which is only necessary if you want to cut glass etc…..), it’s great for foamboard, plastic etc…… but l’m not the biggest fan of it for cutting dibond. It’s not accurate, it’s hard to cut and l’m not over impressed.
I’ve spoken to the people who have tried to remedy the situation, but as yet it is not good. I will be speaking to them this week to try and get it right.
Keencut had an excal 5000 at sign UK and l spoke with them about the difficulty of cutting dibond 3mm with my machine, i have to pull down so so hard for it to cut. The lad who works for me cannot use it!!! They said that it should cut fine and invited me to try the one on display. That one cut great unlike mine. 😥

i bought a 5000 not long ago at first very disappointed

not convinced yet but the lad changed the blade again and now works fine and cuts square.

billy let me know how you get on cos 3mm diabond is a pain and i think it should be a bit easyer

keith I have a keencut sabre – its hand operated unit mine being 5′ length

basically its a portable unit which i lay on the bench or for cutting down longer lengths than will fit on my benchI lay it on the floor

it cuts magnetics foam board and dibond, and I have to say its one of the most useful bits of kit I have bought

    Hi everyone

I emailed the Han-D-Cut people yesterday, and this is the reply I had back, if anyone is interested.

    HI Lorraine,
Han-d-cut is a new product that is at this time is selling in the USA. I would like to have a distributor in the UK. If you know the name of any companies that would be a good candidate I would appreciate if you would share it with me.
As for your needs, please tell me which model you are interested in and Perhaps I can work out a discount to help pay the freight.
Where did you find out about the Product?

    Thanks and Regards,
