I am interested in buying a cutter from keen cut.
Can’t decide if to go for the Javelin or Practik. Does anyone use them? are they worth the investment?
Upto now been using a straight edge and utility knife. I am looking for something quicker, more accurate and which leaves a better finish.

    thanks

I use the Practik and although it is supposed to be marginally less accurate than the Javelin it is head and shoulders betters than a knife and straight edge and fine for Foamex (or similar). 10mm Foamex is hard work though, I went on to an Excalibur and that is fine on 10mm and even cuts Dibond. Tip on Famex more lighter cuts will give a more accurate and square cut.

I find with the Excalibur you need to adjust the blade to it’s shortest length for 1st few cuts & then when it wont cut any deeper adjust blade out a bit more. it stops the blade from bending as it cuts & you get a squarer cut

don’t get caught out if you want the free standing machine, the tripod leg is extra.

We have the Javelin here and love it. Bought it with the “Big Bench” which I am not as keen on. We now use (90% of the time) our wall-mounted cutter just for rough cuts with all of the finishing cuts on the Javelin.

we use the Practik, its good at what it does, 10mm is hard work and the blade will ‘flex’ if pushed hard through, so use more, but lighter strokes and it will be fine. ( not had to wear any plasters since purchase!)

We have a Practik, as Darryl said it does the job but a little hard going on 10mm …. plenty of light strokes and you get there in the end 😀 We have the table saw to do some of the sttuff.

    Clive,
I’m asking myself all the questions you asked in your post of 19th Feb.
What did you go for in the end??
And how are you getting on with it 2 months later??

After reading these posts, I raced out and purchased a Javelin in march. Best money I have spent in ages. My next purchase is the excalibur. Had a demo and really impressed.

does anyone find the +/- 1mm accuracy an issue on the practik?

the javelin i see is more accurate but is that level of accuracy needed?

    thanks

The crowd I got my javelin from will not stock the practik because they say it is not built as a good as the javelin, and they had some reservations about its accuracy during their own testing of demo models.

Don’t know if that helps you at all.

I have the 3 meter Javelin and find it great, only comment is if I have the blade pulled back it does not always cut clean (Exhibition graphics 125 micron opaljet with 80 micron laminate) and if I extend the blade it wanders as it follows previous cuts in my cutting mat, not an issue if used with Big Bench as always cuts along same path.
When I was at show on wednesday I see they have another version out which is worth a look as it was twice the height, so alot more rigid which would be handy if using 3 meter without bench because they do tend to flex alot as you move them around, think it was called the big one or something like that.
