  • Kangoo van – getting the text straight?

    Hi guys

As you probably know we’re new to signs and have had our Roland SP540 for 2 months now.

We’ve done a lot of different things including a couple of vans where we’ve sub-contracted the actual fitting. No we are feeling confident enough to have a go at fitting a van ourselves and we’ve chosen a nice easy one to start with – text only on a Kangoo.

The one thing that’s worrying me is getting the vinyl on straight. Van panels are never straight. Is there a rule (pardon the pun) to get it straight?

    Any advice would be welcome.

On vans that don’t have any straight lines you need to tape the lettering on and then stand back for a look, basically you need to keep it level but tweak it a little to make it look right.
It helps to have the same amount of backing all the way round as this keeps things in proportion, nothing worse than trying to position lettering that has loads of spare backing on the bottom and non on the top or it’s not parallel to the lettering etc.

You’ll soon get the hang of it so don’t worry.

run everything of the rubber/plastic moulding along the side of the van.
or, run everything of the sill (along bottom of side doors of the van.
measure up from either of the above at the widest points possible. e.g. right of back wheel arch, left of front wheel arch. then one in the middle just in case 😀 run a "2 length of masking tape right the way through… from back to front hitting the marks you have just made. kneel down and look along the tape at and angle and see if you are running up and down over the length. if so… lift tape and re-lay it. once your confident the tape is bang on level/straight. start taking all your sizes from the tape as your level.
when laying the vinyl up it will look a mile out to the panels on the van. but once all is on and app tape removed it will look fine. trust me, I’m a doctor 😉

Thank you Steve and Doctor Robert

Sounds easy. Your advice makes sense, so we’ll give it a go.

    Cheers
