Just wondered….
Posted by Nigel Fraser on 13 December 2003 at 22:48Has anyone else tried “Grafigel” (no its not a sexual aid!) from Grafityp.
I sold one of my customers two 3 lit bottles of the stuff at £120+ to strip off a articulated lorry trailer. They say it hasn’t touched the vinyl at all and it says in the catalogue – “fast and effortless, simply apply by brush saving hours of preparation in removing calendered and cast self adhesive vinyls”
I never used the stuff myself so just wondered if anyone else had tried it ?back soon….

Blimey Nigel
(edited by admin 😕 )
Tried one from Doro-Tape, expensive and equally useless. Better off with a heat gun, and Cellelouse thinners (test area first) to remove the residue, horrible job.

Must be honest I havent tried one of theese but there are a couple on the board here that swear the best thing to use are steam wallpaper strippers….
Timmy…

is it a curtain sider or rigid?
it can be down to the type of vinyl used mate..
curtain siders arent cast or calander & if on a rigid body it could be reflective.
i used the stuff from 3m it bubbled up the vinyl but didnt assist in removing the glue..
you have gold access.. try taking a look at my demo on glue removal for some other tips.
i havent used the grafi stuff so couldnt give advice..
3M , i would expect the best from and that was my results.. -
Allan,
I see it must be a common problem then with the chemicals – lucky for me I don’t have to get the old stuff off.
They have a 44′ trailer with two 2′ wide stripes down each side to clear 😆Thanks anyway.

Nigel,
If they are in a commercial yard they may have use of a steam cleaner try it up with that it will take it off (even takes off vinyl when you don’t want it to)

ive been stripping tons of trucks over the last few months.. we tried the pressure washer method 2inches from the vinyl working it round the edges.. if the stuffs fitted right with a good grade vinyl this will take for ever! 😕

Thanks for the advice, I’ll pass on tips to my customer.
Just a quick question Robert – I have read the FAQs but cant see why I cant view others profiles ? Probably just me being thick I guess….
ta anyway,
Nigel

Nigel,
Only limited peeps can view the profiles as there seems to have been a problem in the past with some naughty ppl spamming signboard members. Not nice. Think only Robert and moderators can view them now.
You coulda saved me some wine tho 😥 😉
Cheers, Dewi

I’m afraid dewi is right mate..
Normal Profile access is limited to registered users of the site only. After problems with profiles being used elsewhere on the net I had a “new” profile access group created specially.
Even that did not stop the problem of spamming & misuse of other folk’s personal details.
As I enforce full “personal details” to be submitted before I will allow anyone to use this site. I think it’s my duty to also make sure that these details are kept under lock & key. Not to be used by anyone else for any reason.
Now, profiles can only be viewed by “myself” nobody else can view personal details. So from now on I can get on with running the site the way it should be without coming under fire by unhappy visitors because of spamming etc.
Security & friendliness is something many sites don’t have. I would like this one to be different. Even if it doesn’t suit everyone.Hope you don’t feel off put by my decision mate..

Before i went self employed, i used to do the graphics for a Body shop. They used to spray trucks, vans etc.
Well i remember one GRP Luton Box van i did, real rush job.The client needed the Van back asap.So instead of waiting 2 days to let the paint cure, i had to apply the graphics to the van 4 hours after it had been on bake in the oven. All the Graphics were mactac 9800.
Anyway 6 months later the van was back for a repair to one of the sides, i had to remove some of the vinyl from the damaged side…..easy. NO way, it was stuck like sh*t to a blanket. It was a summers day, i used a heat gun, yet it only came off in tiny bits.Took the best part of 2 days to remove.
So there are alot of factors when removing vinyl, as we all know. Not a nice job at all. -
i think you just suffered wht i did mate.. and it may not be just down to the paint thing..
mactac vinyl does what it says on the tin.. sticks solid & wont come off!
those vans i spoke about were mainly done in mactac 9800 and boy did they give me greif.
you have to laugh or you’ll cry.. we complain about vinyls curling back, shrinking, peeling etc and now we complain it wont come off! 😆 😆the mactac v-wrap is the same.. i think its the best wrap vinyl on the go.
but not the easiest to apply and when its on, its on! 😉 -
I have Grafigel and Grafimove
Grafimove is best for removing adhesive after the vinyl has been removed. Seems to work OK but is quite costly.
White spirit doesn’t work as well as Grafimove but because it is relatively cheap you can afford to soak the glue with it.
Grafigel works by dissolving the actual vinyl
However I have marked my container ‘use with caution’ as on certain surfaces it can leave marks or smears that cannot be removed. So I guess at least the customer didn’t come back claiming the stuff left smears all over the place because that would have been a real headache to solve

Rob,
Small point, are you saying the Mactac wrapping vinyl is really hard to remove If it is does not that defeat the object because as I understood it part of the hype on all this wrapping was that when the campaign is over or whatever, it can be easy removed leaving a nice clean stonechip free vehicle.
I think a bit of clarification on this would be very useful to anyone concidering undertaking a wrap for the first time. Maybe you know of wrapping vinyls that are more easy to remove that you could advise on.

there is short life wrap vinyls available. mactac have one for printing the name slips me at the moment. the other is KPMF. they do not do a long life one, but still offer 3 years removable. its alos much easier to apply.
it does have down sides though.macfleet,
we have a customer that has about 20 astra vans. we hade to change the back of the van to solid red. he runs his vans into the ground so when he got the new fleet. i knew that only mactacs macfleet would be the one to give me peace of mind.
i feel it stretches further, once stuck it stuck & has no come backs that i know of. the 20 van rears are now wrapped and look brill..see my demo of the tan van… very deep recess work! 😉
like i said if its temp promotional wraps then KPMF or …oh yes.. “mactac IMAGin, i think its called…
for something thats gonna stay stuck.. macfleet.
i would say macfleet will act/perform better than any wrap equivilant. -
Thanks again Robert + others, I understand (and appreciate) the need for security of personal contact info. Since I like others suffer from the dreaded spam mail.
I was just being nosy really – wondering about other site contributors and their companies !Re the wrap films, I did a rear and half of two sides of a lwb sprinter using the kpmf VWS film and had no problem fitting it – lovely and easy to handle as it is really thick, and with gentle heating it goes over compound curves really nice.
Unfortunately it didn’t stay in the panel recesses at all, I had to go back and cut them all out and fit new strips in the gaps, NOT happy !!John – have you found the grafigel works OK on vinyl then ? (apart from the streaking prob) cos it looks like I am going to have to try and send back this stuff to Grafityp for my disgruntled customer.
Andrew, I had the same problem with a motorsport team locally – they used to get the cars repaired at a bodyshop and as soon as the paint was touch dry the graphics had to go on – still so soft that the surrounding paint used to take an impression of the glue on the underside of the transfer tape !
On a comlete opposite extreem I had to stick some really nasty graphics on to a beat up old renault van for a building company, I put the whole name down on one side before removing any of the app tape and when I tried to peel it off, all the blue van paint came with it too. Trouble was the van was red underneath, Doh !!Right, off to put up the christmas tree now ! see you later…

Yeah Nigel I have had that experience on some of the old wrecks bought into me to do.
Tip: If you expect a problem once applied give the application tape a good water soaking and leave it for 10 minutes then very carefully pull it away.
