Joins in glass etch vinyl
Posted by John Dorling on 12 March 2009 at 11:11Hi All
A customer who I am keen to get some more work from has asked me to frost a window in their shop which is 1600mm square. It needs to have their logo cut into it which is approx 1200mm x 200mm. It is a replacement job for a broken window and they have sent me a photo. The current etch looks seamless to me. So, my question is, as I only have a 54" cutter, and I don’t recall seeing window etch at 1600mm wide, can I do it with a join or will it shrink and look crap? Not done an etch job before so any help much appreciated.
Thanks
John

HI John
I did a window with a join in it the other day, it was a small little toilet window and I did it as I had some offcuts with me but had to be 2 pieces.
DON’T DO IT 😮
It looks terrible and will stand out no matter what you do.
If he had it done before there must be somebody out there who sells wider stuff and then you may have to find somebody with a wide cutter to cut it for you.
sorry mate

Thanks for replies. Warren I had a feeling it would look rubbish, but not sure. And Chris I have thought about this but it needs to be an exact copy as there are 2 identical windows and this one has to be the same as the other one!
Oh well, back to the drawing board. See quotes forum for more…

have you got any spare? overlap then cut through both with a straight edge. You will overtime depending on the material get a little shrinkage but worth a go.

get as many samples of etch as poss if you have to match, i have about 5 here, 3 calendared and 2 cast, all are different, though "it looks different due to age of the other stuff" has worked for me when no match has been found!

Hugh I’m trying but can’t seem to find etch wider than 1520mm, and even if I do find it, I won’t be able to fit it on my plotter!
Bother 🙄

John without meaning to sound rude.
You state they sent you a picture, If your working from this only and wasting time searching surely time would be better spent with a site visit.
You will probably find the existing good window is done in 2 sections or maybe more.
I could be wrong and am guessing but I can’t see someone installing something using a non standard roll size.

Matt seal works good as a frost as well, you could get this 1600 wide or wider, if the logo is simple you can cut it out by hand, but Im sure most people would have just joined it.

It is possible to create a etch glass with having a join but with out having a visible join. Just create a 3mm join this works quite well.
I did a 1.6m window about 3 weeks ago and subbed it out to company in the west who deal with the wide format side of things. If you want there details give me a shout.
But on the whole I try to avoid joins.
James
