Jaguar 610 or Puma 1220?
Posted by Ewan Evans on 2 September 2013 at 21:06Hi all,
Posted about cutters previously but other circumstances put the idea on hold. Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply. This time I’ve been looking at a few different models and in doing so I think I have narrowed it down to a 610 wide jaguar or a 1220 puma as you seem to get a lot more for your money compared to graphtec or roland. Has anyone had either of these machines and if so are they as good as the other brands I mentioned? I’m thinking of sacrificing the mega fast cut speed and tangental mode for a larger cut area opening up more avenues of income to me. Is this wise or should I go for a good quality 610 machine.
Any advice would be appreciated

I think you hit it on the head when you said you seem to get more for your money than with a top brand.
On paper you sure do…in reality there have been savings made in component and build quality…and compatibility.
Wider machines open up the options of less joins, larger panels and actually less waste in my experience. When I left my last employer I bought a used Summa pro 1400. An OLD machine but utterly bomb proof and as good today as the first time it was switched on. Accurate, fast and a joy to use.
I tried a new, cheap graphtec but was underwhelmed. Ideal for the low volume user but I wouldn’t want to be stuck with it. Slow and noisy.Always an advocate of used premium rather than new budget models.

Thanks Dave. I want to buy a new one as I have no luck with pre-owned stuff 😕

Unless you want the faster speed which I would not then the larger size is more beneficial. As David said.
Just read the spec of these cutters and if true in the real world and a nice price think would be fine and if I was buying tomorrow would go and have a play with one.

Hi Chris,
I would love to go an try these machines but it’s quite a distance from Glasgow. I’m thinking of going for the 610 Puma now as I don’t need faster than 600mm p/s and I would hardly use a big cutter so doesn’t justify the extra £1000 price. I’d be interested to hear from people who own a Puma to see how they compare to the big 3 brand names.
cheers

havin had a few cutting plotters cutting speed is not an issue it will spend longer stopped than it will going 😮 i would be more intrested how well it can track in a straight line over longer jobs 🙂 i do think you are right to buy a new machine rather than second hand but
go and see it operating before you spend your money. 🙂 -
ive been very happy with my summacut D60 (610)…been going for 10 years no probs, just a new cutting strip…have a look at those too…Id try Harry at Edward Mathias too…what he doesnt know about cutters you could write on a pinhead…

Thanks for the replies. I am currently in negotiation with someone regarding a second hand hardly used Graphtec CE-5000, if this falls through I think I am going for a new GCC Puma III. I like the Puma but Graphtec seem more tried and tested which gives me more confidence.

if your gonna ring Harry….be prepared for a looooooong phone call 🙂 he likes a chat !

I’ll be perfectly honest. The Graphtec CE-5000 was the cheap Graphtec I’d tried.
I was underwhelmed having previously been a user of their higher end offerings and maybe I just expected more from the ‘name’ rather than see it as what it is – a quality branded budget machine.
Hence my move to used ex-top of the range stuff.
One thing you can be sure of with a new Graphtec is it won’t just die on you and backup is always going to be there…bit of a shot in the dark with a used machine unless you get lots of test work done & results emailed. eg. 3mm high text weeded out & scanned to check cutting performance & accuracy.

Thanks again for the replies. Not had a chance to speak to Harry yet but I will as I fancy trying a smart blade.
I decided to go to Liverpool last night and pick up a basically unused Graphtec CE 5000-60…set it up today with the Corel plugin and I am well impressed so far bearing in mind I have moved up from a Creation P Cut. The graphtec seems far superior but slightly more complicated to set up. For some reason I can’t get the cutting controller to change the defaults for things like outdoor vinyl. When I change the values then try to save it it keeps coming up with an error code. I can change the values on the machine no problem though so it’s all good 😀
