  • Jagged Edges from vectoring

Not too sure if anyone else has had this problem but when Im vectoring an image, I always find jagged edges everywhere. Im not too sure if it is a plotter or software problem.

At the moment, Im using Artcut which was provided with my plotter. To vector images, im having to use photoshop and then transfer them as a TIFF file to Artcut which seems like the only file they like to open.

Hoping someone can shed some light on this matter.

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you might want to do a bit of node editing before sending to the plotter.

I don’t know your software but you need to adjust the ‘smoothing’ option, if there is one. More smoothing is needed and perhaps less ‘detail’. The autotrace is following the pixels too well which suggests not enough smoothing and too high a detail setting.

Of course, manual vectorising is the best option. 😉

Tiff files are "raster" images so it seems like you are opening a your file in Photoshop which handles raster images, creating a working path "vector" and exporting the vector as Tiff which is saving as a raster file again…

The working path will always follow the pixels so its best to have a good/ decent sized image to start with, and mess around with the tolerance too…

I’ve never used Artcut so can’t give advice on an alternative way to produce a decent vector file from your existing software, but manual redrawing is probably the best way to go.

this job is not easy all the time … tbh vectoring logos doesnt happen that often here, we either source a better copy or give it to andrew (see vectorwise on front page)

Thanks for all your replies, much appreciated.

When you say draw them out manually, do you mean draw them on my software or literally, pen and paper?

Mat, what Andy means is rather than use a software vetorising tool, is to draw using the software drawing tool to re-create the pictueo/bject shape. Although it may take a bit longer, the results will be better.(usually)
There is a demo done by Andrew of Vectorwise, on the boards, If you are just starting out I would reccomend taking out membership to view these demos, you will find them invaluable.
