It’s rather long, any advice?
Posted by Mark B on 9 April 2005 at 16:15Hi guyz first time post here so please be gentle.
I have only been playing in the sign world for about six months so some help would be appreciated,
On Monday I am going to be fitting the longest piece of vinyl I have ever fitted, it’s 25cm high (2 x 10cm bits with a 5 cm gap) and just under 4m long, now I don’t usually have problems fitting but I think I might with this Length, it is going on the side of a vehicle. Any advice anyone.
Thanx in advance
Mark

Hi and Welcome Mark 😀
You could always use a centre hinge. Offer up your graphics to the vehicle as you would do normally, with a couple of bits of tape holding it in position, then apply 2 or 3 strips of masking tape to the centre of the graphic. Peel back the backing from one side to where you have the masking and cut it off with scissors. Apply that side to the vehicle, then remove the centre hinge and apply the other side.
Sounds easy when you type it out, but I know its a bummer. If you can get a second pair of hands to help you hold the vinyl whilst you apply, it makes it easier.
Hope this helps a little.
Cheers, Dewi

Hi Mark,
take someone with you if possible. An extra pair of hands and a bit of moral support never go amiss.
Don’t remove the backing off more than you can handle at one time. (enter extra pair of hands ) !
Stay calm, it’s just a bit of vinyl. It can always be re-cut if necessary.
Good luck.

Hi Mark, have you given any though as to how you are going to apply these yourself? Are the two strips of vinyl seperate or have you cut them together and tapped them up?
If it were me I would probably apply them seperatly, no application tape.
Run a line of masking tape along the side of the vehicle which you can use as a guide when you apply the vinyl. Take your time doing this as if you get that bit wrong then the vinyl will be wrong. You can sight along the length of the vehicle to make sure the tape is running straight and make adjustments as required. Once the masking tape is applied you can use the edge of the tape to ensure the vinyl runs straight. Just repeat for the second strip. You could also use a chalk line or pencil marks but I find these more awkward to work from.
Make use of any natural breaks that you can as well, if there is a side door then don’t try fitting 4mtrs at once just fit to edge of door etc. -
I almost always apply as Dewi has suggested. You can also bring some magnetics with you to hold the graphic in place instead of tape (but use the tape for the hinge method). Don’t forget the camera either!

quote Marekdlux:Don’t forget the camera either!
The ideal fitting partner, never argues, never complains, just sits on its tripod holding the vinyl patiently while you busyily apply it. All it asks in payment is a 35mm Konica film and a quick dust over with a soft cloth. Ahhhh, Pratika! 😀
Ahem…. 😳 I’ll get my coat 😳

What you all suggest sounds good, as I am doing both sides I think I will try different methods and let you know how I get on,

Ok first off no laughing, no pointing out the ‘Event Horse’ is ever so slightly to the left, I know it’s not finished, (fussy customer now wants more strips) but apart from that it on.
Mmmmmmm ok now how do I attach the piccies????? 🙄

You see where that big silver area at the top slopes down at an angle? If you trim your lines to that angle it will look smartlier. (yes smartlier is a real word). Other than that, I don’t know what you were worried about. Lines look nice and parallel to me. 🙂
