    Hi Lee

I would choose Yell.com & Yellow pages every time. I have tried Thompsons, BT phone book & Kelly search and would not give you the time of day for any of them.

    Best wishes

    Alex

we use yellow pages… we get work from it… but i would say the work is from anything to your high street shops just opening. allot of the time wasters are calling simply advert hoping to get ideas on prices, then go for the local company anyway, but now armed with a price guide.
you will experience some right idiots calling, i can tell you :lol1:
anyway, we do get work from it… plenty more than the advert costs itself and its not small. so yes, its worth while.

we have tried the other options as has been said, but i don’t think we get much, if anything from them.
went the online route with "scoot" took animated adverts on listings the lot. "not one single inquiry that we know of in 12 months"

i really do not think any of our long term, or large customers customers came about as a result of any of the above. these came about from leaflet drops, door chapping and 9/10 times word of mouth.

you can get a FREE add on yell.com but it only has your company name and phone number, if you pay for a add on yell it gives you a link to your web site and a few other odds n sods you dont get with the free 1.

The Yellow Pages book entry is OK, as for Yell.com; I’ve had an enhanced listing for 3 months and I haven’t had a single call from it. Considering that I’m at the top of the only page for my area, that’s not good. 360 odd squids up the swanny!

In summary, book good, website cack, word of mouth best.

Lee this is quite a difficult one because yes people do get work from yellow pages but as a one man band it may not be worth the cost of the work you get.
What I mean by that is that a bigger sign company can have a sales guy who just goes out to see the people and some he wins some he loses but that is his job and nothing else. When you work for yourself and have to do everything it becomes a little different. Robert is right you will get a lot of tyre kickers from a yellow pages add, you can spend a lot of time putting together a quote all for nothing and sometimes that is time you could be better spent doing something else. You will get work from yellow pages, some people do a lot better than others so its a tough one to call.
I had an add for a couple of years but then decided it wasn’t worth the time I was spending chasing the leads I got to keep it up and found I had more time to concentrate on things like making sure my regular customers were kept happy and encouraging them to find work for me by referring me to their friends and businesses they dealt with. Referrals are great as you will probably know because as long as you give them a fair price they don’t go looking for another quote.

Book good, website..ho-hum, word of mouth – never fails.
I have at least 70% of my work from repeat & recommendation.

Book is good for local work – no need for a flashy full page…but spend some money not just a single line entry.

I get hassled by Scoot & Thomson’s all the time – great promises of thousands of enquiries and better for the ones at the top of the pages – I was given free ‘highlighted’ ads for a month – jack squat. Same with offers to increase website hits…I wish they would do some checking BEFORE they call you as it’s embarrassing to tell them you’re better placed than they are in half the search engines.

I’ve never had much time for the Yellow Pages book or website.

Most of our work is repeat business or recommendation.

I think money spent on advertising could be better spent on careful research of your potential market and mailshots directly to the right person.

Quite often we find that an individual will change job and move company and contact us again at a later date, or recommend us to colleagues within the same company. 🙂

I think the yellow pages is ok, I get a few enquiries from yell.com some of which have turned into jobs, on the other hand the Phone book is a complete and utter waste of time, they mess up your bills and they mess up your advert and I havent had any enquiries from the advert, this year they have decided that the more you spend on an advert with them, the closer you are to the front of the listing ( its not going to be alphabetical any more ) which means all the big companies who spend lots on advertising will get the premier listing and the smaller companies like myself will be relegated to the end of the listing!

i’ve got yell.com and yellow pages, not much work from either, a few enquiries from yell.com.

the worst thing is the add in yellow pages is wrong and offers a service i don’t provide!! can’t be changed once it’s printed!

i don’t like the way if you put an a or a few aaaaa in front of your name on the pages adds you get to the front. it changes the company name and yellow pages obviously know this happens.

too much money for not much!

agreed about the word of mouth, very little messing about as you’ve normally got the job the second the walk through the door !

as for scoot etc, i have a free line on yell.com, and in yellow pages, i’ve worked for enough different types of businesses over the years, to know that they’re not worth the big prices they charge.

re website hits, i’m not sure of the number of hits i have, but i’ve just done a quick google search, for signmaker and my area, and up i pop at the top ! good lass who did my site, might not be the flashiest site in the world, but it’s at the top !

It might be your getting better hits because of the spelling mistake on your header text :lol1:

tho I have only been on yell.com for 3 months, my first and only job covered the cost of the advert. Personally I use yell.com all the time which is why I decided to give it a try. I have just quoted for another job which I hope to get, then it will be profit from then on in.. Forget yell pages, waste of time and money. Make it a habit to always ask where someone got your number from so you know what works or who referred them for a little thankyou.

    Nope, Look carefully 😮

It’s in the text under your name (in the jpeg)

Hugh, I couldn’t see a spelling mistake in your header text but my spelling is rubbish so I may have missed something, the only thing I did notice which doesn’t quite sound right is that on your home page where you list your services you have "signs boards" rather than "sign boards" only read a little as well as checking the header and as I say my spelling is pants so there might be something or maybe just Dave pulling yer leg!!!

took me ages to find that, i was getting paranoid and reading each word individually, making sure it was spelt right, hence when i read ‘signs’ and ‘boards’ i didnt notice as they’re both correct spellings, just not grammatically correct !

    thanks,
